UPDATED: Pearl Cup moves into Dallas Arts District May 13

Despite the ATTPAC claim about it being "the only cafe located in the Dallas Arts District", one can also chow down at various restaurants/cafes in One Arts Plaza, Trammell Crow Center, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Nasher Sculpture Center, all of which are located within the boundaries of the Dallas Arts District. Of course, just across the street on one side are the food trucks at the Klyde Warren Park, and just across the street on two sides are two different restaurants of Stephan Pyles.

Perhaps what they meant to say was that their new cafe would be the only cafe located in the ATTPAC. But like much of the p r that they produce, they just got carried away. If you REALLY get hungry in the Dallas Arts District, you can always head over to One Arts Plaza and say "Oh, thank heaven for Seven-Eleven."

Name-change game: Palladium Ballroom becomes South Side Ballroom

North Dallas--is it the area around North Dallas High School, around Haskell/Blackburn and McKinney/Cole? Or is it farther north, north of Northwest Highway between Centrl and the Tollway? Or is it farther north, north of LBJ? Or is it farther north, in the Bent Tree/Renner area?

South Dallas--is it the area around Fair Park? Or is it everything south of the Trinity River? Or is it part of South Oak Cliff? Or is South Oak Ckiff part of it?

East Dallas--Is it the area of the old city of East Dallas, just east of downtown? Or is it everything from downtown to Lakewood north of Baylor? Or is it the Lakewood/M Streets area? Is it everything east of Central, south of Mockingbird, west of White Rock Lake and north of I-30? Or is it everything from downtown to Mesquite and up to Garland?

West Dallas--Is it the area you find yourself in when you reach the end of the new bridge? What happens if you keep on driving at the end of the bridge?

See the classic side of Dallas through these 15 typical city adventures

What's that place just past Deep Ellum, that is unlike any other place in the world? Oh, yeah, Fair Park, home of the greatest collection of Art Deco exhibition buildings in the world, and THE Cotton Bowl stadium, home of more football excitement (can you say historic Southwest Conference, UT and OU, and Grambling and Prairie View), and more fried food than any other place on earth.

Sheesh! Who makes up your lists?

Photos: Former Trammell Crow exec will sell $9.75M contempo marvel

The owner has been paying taxes on this house at a valuation less than one-third the asking price for this house. The rest of us are therefore subsidizing this owner for an additional 200% of the taxes that he ought to be paying (if his asking price is anywhere close to his valuation). Unless he has inflated his asking price triple the tax valuation, he is underpaying his real estate taxes by a boatload of money. Multiply this for all of the neighborhoods of North Dallas and the Park Cities, and it is clear that the owners of these large houses are screwing middle-class taxpayers every year. Think about that next year when you pay your real estate taxes.

Tim Tebow cancels event at First Baptist Church Dallas

Where does Scripture say you get to pick and choose the rules? Do you eat shrimp? Do you eat pork? Do you eat cheeseburgers? Have you ever been divorced? Do you tell lies, even little white ones? Do you wear cotton/polyester blends? Do you observe the Sabbath on the seventh day (Saturday)? Do you work on the Sabbath day? And do you love your neighbor as yourself?

Video: 13 Dallas employees talk about growing up gay

I moved to Dallas in 1970, and a video like this (produced by employees of the city government), would have been inconceivable. We have all evolved, both the city and its citizens, and we are all the better for it.

Thanks to Frank Librio, Mary Suhm, and Mayor Rawlings for communicating this positive message for the city and to the city, and thanks especially to the many city employees, gay and straight, who work every day to make our diverse city better.

Dallas has one of the Top 12 arts district in the nation, according to ArtPlace study

Does this blog have an editor? Does this writer know the meaning of the word "unattested"?

I would guess that the first sentence of this post is actually the opposite of what the writer meant, given the context, but one never knows.

5 landmarks you probably didn't know about in Downtown Dallas

“The tunnel system was developed during a time when there really was no street life downtown,” said Kourtny Garrett, senior vice president of marketing at Downtown Dallas, Inc." WRONG WRONG WRONG.

I worked in Downtown Dallas from 1970 until 1991, when the tunnels were developed. There was vibrant streetlife there, until the tunnels helped kill it off. The changing nature of Downtown during that period unquestionably contributed to the demise of urban streetlife Downtown, but the development of the tunnels guaranteed that most retail stores and restaurants were doomed at the street level.

First LGBT archive in South headed to UNT

You might want to check that reference to "gay architect Philip Johnson" (who, by the way, would have been appalled at being described in that manner). The collection that was donated was primarily created and preserved by Phil Johnson, a well-known Dallas personality and historian of gay history in our city.

Burger review: Adair's Saloon in Dallas

Liked Adair's when they were on Cedar Springs, until I found out they didn't like people like me. Haven't been back since, and don't plan to. No reason to support folks who want my money but aren't willing to treat me with respect. Hear that, Chick-fil-a? Hear that Cracker Barrel?

Interview: Joe Sears of A Tuna Christmas

I have seen three of the Tuna plays multiple times, as have many other fans. I have seen them with Joe and Jaston, and I have seen them with other fine actors. I don't know either Joe or Jaston, but I know Pearl, and Bertha, and Vera, and the rest of the citizens of Tuna better than I know my cousins. When Joe and Jaston are on the stage, they just ARE those characters, inside and out. It is more than acting--it is a transformation from two men into an entire town full of characters. There is not a normal person among them, thank God. Other actors will PERFORM the four faces of Tuna, but only Joe and Jaston will BECOME Tuna, in all its glory.

Speed limits on some central Texas highways increase to 75 mph

When are they going to raise the ridiculously low limits on I-45 south from Dallas? On this wide open freeway, the limit is 60 mph south all the way to the Ellis County line--through rural Dallas County. Then, the entire distance of 45 through Ellis County the limit is only 65 mph on a country freeway. Only when you cross into Navarro County, near Corsicana, does the limit rise to the state maximum. That is more than 45 miles of rural freeway driving at city speeds, leading to the infamous speed traps in Wilmer, Hutchins, Ferris, Palmer, and Rice.

Dallas activist Roger Kallenberg died on Sunday

For all those who are engaging in the current round of teacher-bashing, these testimonials from former students and colleagues of Roger are your answer--and your refutation. Roger was just one of the more visible and articulate examples of the power of a good, no, great teacher (of whom there are many) to enlighten the hearts and lives of many, many people. We are saddened by his loss, yet grateful for his gifts to us as a community.

UPDATEDx2: Fire temporarily shuts down original Sonny Bryan's on Inwood

The problem is that the name "Fox" should NEVER, EVER appear in the same sentence with the word "news." Doing so confuses people and may cause them to infer that there is some relationship between the two.

Flower Mound squatter still exercising his rights

If someone with a legal interest in the property (such as the owner or mortgagee) shows up in the next ten years, he is out the door and liable for trespassing damages.

If a neighbor (or anyone else, for that matter) wants to get rid of him, the following would probably work:

    1. Track down the last known legal owner of the property from the county deed records and tax office records. If that person is dead, track down the heirs of that person. Notify the owner or the heirs that some is trying to "take" their property, and that they should take action now to prevent this from happening.

    2. Track down the holder of the mortgage on the property and notify them of the facts. If they are not interested in protecting their rights in the property, offer to purchase their interest in the property at some absurdly low price. Buy out the mortgage cheap, foreclose on the property, and evict the squatter.

    3. Look in the mirror and ask why you really care about what this man has done to enrich himself.

Video: Rick Perry claims Texas teaches creationism in public schools

One of the reasons that Texas schools do not teach creationism is that the teaching of creationism was outlawed by the U. S. Supreme Court in a 7-2 decision 24 years ago as being in violation of the U. S Constitution. Not that the Constitution matters much to Cowboy Rick (except when it suits him. e.g. Amendsments II and X).

You go to a Greek restaurant and order a hamburger, and then complain when the rest of the food (the GREEK rest of the food) tastes better than your hamburger?

    How surprising!

Check back with us when you decide to rate the hamburgers at a restaurant whose specialty is hamburgers.

New Dallas Museum of Nature & Science original, but not natural

I am not sure who makes less sense--Patrick Kennedy or Alexander Troup. I can't understand what either of them is saying. But, thanks for giving each of them a free platform to express themselves.

Maybe someday one of them will say something I can understand.

    Maybe

UPDATED: Jack's Backyard closed; owner issues statement

Note to Jack: Next time, try a location with non-valet customer parking available. If you are going to do an Austin-style, laid back, low down bar, don't make your customers do the Dallas valet-only thing.

Restaurant review: Chicken House in Dallas

Before Chicken House, before Brothers, there was Henderson Chicken. And there still is, up on Abrams at Royal. (Yes, I know there is also a location on Grand near Fair Park, but this one is closer--and that means hotter chicken when you get it home).

Temporary support columns were removed from the Wyly Theater structure Wednesday

This theatre is as radical for its time as the Frank Lloyd Wright Theatre (the Kalita Humphreys) was 50 years ago. Let's just hope that this new one is more user friendly and easier to maintain than Mr. Wright's masterpiece.

Heinz to shut down Dallas factory, unemploy 200

Shouldn't that be George Bush's pic on the Heinz bottle, rather than John Kerry's? After all, George Bush, who got himself re-elected President in 2004, is responsible for the economic mess that this country now faces, ketchup (catsup?) and all.

McKinney approves funding for Dr Pepper StarCenter

McKinney says no to an arts center, but yes to hockey. McKinney refuses to participate in funding a Collin County arts facility (which Frisco, Allen, and Plano have all approved and agreed to fund), but McKinney thinks yet another hockey rink would be just dandy. I guess we know what their priorities are.
