Thanks for covering this. I wasn't able to make it out, however I'm glad the event went well.

Dallas mayor’s church of choice causing flap in LGBT circles
It's possible, Travis, however I agree with Jason in that I don't believe that he has to obligatorily disavow his Southern Baptist roots to appease the gay community any more than he should seek mandatory enrollment of his family on the Friendship West Baptist Church books to appease any frictions in the African-American community.

Audio: Mandrake Society Radio interviews Jesse Garcia, President of LULAC 4871
Jesse says in the podcast interview that it's currently referred as the "Rainbow" because its membership comprised of openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender ( or LGBT) people AND heterosexual community allies. As far as Oak Cliff..well, that's just where the good stuff is at!

Ha! Queer LiberAction held a Downtown kiss-in a couple of weekends ago, and that was controversial. So, we'll see what happens.

Dicho's bookstore closes location in Dallas' Bishop Arts district
Ugh! Another mess in the B.A.D. part of town.So tired of going to that area and finding stores open every other Tuesday from 4:15 pm to 5:43pm (expect the fourth Tuesday of the month), or something just as silly as that.
Sorry, no tears for Dichos. When you've got book stores all around town open all hours (not the mention the convenience of online shopping), how are you going to compete being open as few as they were? On Sundays, they were only open 11am to 3pm! Give me a break!
I mourned the loss of Nodding Dog because I loved the space (granted the addition of the bar added confusion as to its real direction), but now I really love the space of Cafe Brasil because it's the only place open in that area with regular hours that you can count on.

Photos and video: Million Gay March for Equality in Dallas
It communicates to our own community, especially in light of what happened the night before in Ft. Worth at Rainbow Lounge. And to 1200 -1400 people, it did just that.

Photos and video: Million Gay March for Equality in Dallas
How does the number of attendees of the march determine success in terms of changing hearts and minds? I've heard a lot of ragging on this group who've put this march together and I honestly feel it's unfair. Minds and hearts ARE being engaged. That's the point. I know, because I talked to people in the march and rally-people who originally weren't coming and decided to get involved. Nothing pathetic about that.
If this were a Christian church group, would you say that a small church of the same number was ineffective?
Next steps? I'm sure there are discussions going on. In the meantime, let's not be so quick to dismiss these efforts. In fact, other groups can coordinate the "next steps" efforts, if they're not so caught up in knocking others down. In light of the raid on the Rainbow Lounge in Ft. Worth on Saturday night, it's clear that we need to find many ways to speak out more often.

Why is Dallas hurting for money so bad? That is the only reason why this would even be proposed.

Southwest Center Mall Urban Land Institute Use Study announced to nervous tenants
I understand the amount of property taxes paid by the mall and surrounding properties, however the shopping experience at SWC is a woeful one. Nothing but a string of empty spaces, dollar stores, knock-off art and gospel tapes, and cell-phone accessory peddlers now. I remember when this mall was really kicking. Now, it's just sad.

Oak Cliff's Bishop Arts District faces potential expansion
This area of Oak Cliff is primarily Latino, so sure, there are a variety of taquerias (among other food options) and most of the tire shops provide a valuable service (sometimes, late into the evening and weekends). I just think that using words like "cluttered" and "tired" is a bit unfair. Besides, can someone explain to me what a "walkable, urban sanctuary" is in practice? A current Dallas example of that would be nice.
