Local chefs fight "vegetable prejudice" during West Dallas dinner

Great detail: "The milk's mild, smooth drizzle paired with the fruit's puckering tartness and crust's sugary foundation was punch to the soul. It tasted real, living, whole." Makes me want.

Man without hands sues Six Flags for being kicked off water ride

No, just NO. There are teenagers letting people on and off the rides. At first glance they probably thought it would be for his own safety, and those that thought a little further ahead, to keep their employer from getting sued. So much for that. So he didn't get to ride - he should be happy with an apology and a 2013 Season Pass. No wonder everything is so dang expensive. I want people to be treated fairly and equitably as well, but this is abusive.

Dessert review: Cupcake Bliss grants peerless ecstasy to courageous pilgrims

You're not kidding. That salted caramel cupcake is TO DIE FOR. I once went by for a fix and they had sold out, thus closed early. I rattled the glass door and cried softly to myself and to passers by. If you're thinking of making the trek and it's after 3p - call first to make sure they still have your fave flave and that they haven't sold it all. PS the peanut butter choc ones are worth getting the pb all up in your braces. PPS a friend once thought I told her "Cheeseburger Rd"

Glenn Beck said treatment on American Airlines flight made him feel "subhuman"

I don't listen to Glenn Beck's show, but I would have been humiliated as well. As if flying isn't stressful enough. Flight attendants do it all day, every day, but even the most seasoned of flyers are well aware of close quarters, security issues and terrorist threats. Come on, people, suck it up and do your job.

Review: Bedford residents flocked to city's first-ever food truck fest

Bedford is really underserved as far as restaurants go. Lots of turnover, and now with the highway expansion, it's run a few good ones out of town. Bring on the food trucks!

Sissy's, new Lisa Garza restaurant, screens applicants by looks

Although looks may be part of it, it seems as though "Tracy" is overqualified to be a server. Pari "sounds" more energetic, less suspicious, more open to opportunities, well-traveled - Tracy appears and sounds as though she'd possibly start as a server and quickly feel underemployed and want to move up - not great for an employer that REALLY just needs a server.

This was a fun read, but maybe the experiment would have been more balanced if the voice and experience were more similar between them.

UPDATED: Court gives Flower Mound squatter one week to leave, appeal

You know, God forbid that the average joe (above-average intelligence and determination, if you ask me) come out of the big picture with the brass ring. Big business wins again - Bank of America definitely needs another REO house. Shame on his neighbors for such small-minded thinking and envy.

I hope that Ken Robinson has at least achieved some notoriety and success for his own real-estate business.

Potager Restaurant in Arlington now open for dinner on weekend nights

Potager's Cafe in Arlington. I had heard about it from somewarez, forgot about it, then read thru the D magazine Best of Dallas. It's the 2009 Best Hippie Restaurant, which is not as important as whether or not I like it. Just FYI.

I do, though, so you're good to go.

So you'll go, and then wish you could pick up the whole quaint place and plop it down closer to where you live. Cuz it's far from Dallas, FW AND the mid-cities. Unless you are a UTA student, it's a drive but worthwhile. Here's how it works.

Walk in. Feel the whirled peas. Their menu changes every day, a menu full of organics and local grocery. Their utensils and dishes and tables are all mismatched in the whole "tea room slash granola re-purposed" way, but it makes sense. They give you portions that you want. Hungry? Tell them. Eating lite? Say so. Then you pay what you think it was worth. Seriously. They have a big, self-serve, green-tea dispenser, and she makes fresh, strong french-pressed coffee every time you ask for it. "Table cream?" the owner Cynthia asked me. I moaned in delight. She laughed, "Indulge! It's the holidays." She misinterpreted my moan of anticipation for one of distress, but I'll overlook it. I can be a tough read sometimes.

Because it's not a typical restaurant environment, you'll need to communicate frequently with the folks behind the counter. They are prepared for this, though. An initial downside that I could quickly learn to live with is that you are expected to ask for what you need. It's not a check-your-water table service. Go get a glass yourself. Ask her to make you some more coffee, more cream. Gather up the tableware yourself, and ask the guy behind the counter if you need a third helping of chicken and dumplings. What?

Ok, the food: I ordered the cranberry salad on the side of chicken and dumplings. Hands down the best CnD I've ever had. Evar. I could taste the cream in the creamy gravy, the huge al dente vegetables and yummy white-meat chicken were fab. Also got a small slice of white bread. The salad seemed like a typical herb mix that was a bit too lite on the dressing, but it was filling. My companion had the tomato-and-feta quiche with so much flavor that it was hard to stick to a couple bites of it. I would have gotten more of it had she not nabbed the last slice. Each of us had the apple pie for dessert. You know how most apple pies sting your mouth with too much sugar? Not this one. Plenty of granny smith apple flavor (skins on), and if you let your tongue linger over every bite, the pie was a harmony of flavor. Impressive.

Use the suggestion chart for an idea of how much to pay them, include tax, tip and grab an envelope to stuff with cash (preferred) into the kettle. The owner of this place told me that her purpose is to be part of something that makes a difference for the environment, and for people. I ended up overpaying, and yet didn't give enough. A wonderful lunch, an eye-opening experience.

It's mostly lunch, and dinner hours/days vary, so keep checking back to their website. And on the chicken and dumpling days, make a special trip.

Second branch of Beyond the Box opens in Ilume on Cedar Springs in Dallas

It's a deli, a lot like Eatzi's or even the deli area in Market Street, but smaller scale. Prices seem to be a bit smaller scale, too, but it kind of depends on your choices.

Here's my shotgun critique of the place. I've reposted this on the Voice blog as well as a Google review.

Great location. Easy to move around inside, even during the rush hour. Parking could be a problem as the word spreads. Service was stellar. They give tastes of anything/everything. Got no feeling of snobbery. They have a gorgeous salad bar, but neither I nor my companion indulged this time. But it looked well-kept and fresh. The CousCous salad in the deli case was inedible. Just too sour all around. It was not tasted beforehand or it wouldn't have been purchased. The Charred tomato soup was fantastic – a Thai flavor about it. The “Sex on the Beach” chicken salad was yummo – lots of chewy fruits like dried cranberries and apricots. The Chicken Cordon Bleu was a bit dry, but not bad; a decent portion. It's so hard to reheat a crumb-coated object properly. The Lasagna Bolognese, while a fabulous flavor, contained extremely overcooked pasta. Most of you foodies know a gummy pasta ruins the whole thing. The Wild Mushroom Risotto “cake” (think crabcake-shaped, not birthday cake) was creamy, good and perfect for a vegetarian looking for a nice side to an entree. The individual serving of dark chocolate mousse cake was heaven, enough to share for days it’s so rich. While I didn’t try the pie, they are just as cute as the dickens. Not as an extensive dessert offering as Eatzi's, but a good selection. This is a quick run-in-go-back sort of place that wants you to eat right while you're stressing over some mundane paperwork at the office.

Love the gourmet (read: overpriced) doggy treat section, just make sure you’re reading the labels and keeping your groceries straight.

Got mine to go, so have nothing to add about the seating area off to the side. Will definitely visit again. Welcome to the neighborhood!
