In defense of the Dallas Morning News' new GM plan

To repeat what a former employer of mine Dean Singleton once told me... "If you want to have freedom of the press you need to be able to afford the paper and ink."

Christmas with the Rat Pack: Live at the Sands

Attended this last night at the Majestic with my wife. We both really enjoyed the show. These guys are great singers that do a great job of representing the personalities, sounds and looks of Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. This is worthwhile if you appreciate the big band era (or the Sinatra soundtrack at Mortons.)

Trans-Texas Corridor now dead, dead, dead. TxDOT officially selects the "No-Build" option.

Video interview and performance: North Texas thereminist Robert Froehner

This is way cool! My understanding is that they used one of these in the song "Good Vibrations" from the Beach Boys

Curious creature called zebra mussel may threaten water supply in Collin County

Zebra mussels infested Lake Erie many years ago and had only one benefit...it cleaned up the pollution. In the case of Lake Erie it was probably worth it - but I doubt it will do Texas any good.

UPDATED: Funniest Comic in Dallas "determined" this last Wednesday

I attended the semi-finals at the Improv last week with a few friends. After not seeing live comedy for years we really enjoyed the show and were impressed with the quality of the comedians. A couple of the comedians were really, really rank and vulgar even for our liberal tastes. You expect some if it - but it was over the top and they didn't make it to the finals. This was fun and we are likely to go again soon.

Dallas-based Belo performing more dire surgery on itself

This latest release is for "BLC" - Belo broadcasting. It follows similar steps that the publishing company "AHC" took a few weeks ago. BLC shed the publishing division last year and it spun off as AHC. It is unbelievable how quicky affiliate television stations have plummeted in value. These stocks are now "BELO" $1 a share currently.

Koi turn up dead in Fort Worth Japanese Garden after accidental chlorination

At least it wasn't a total wipe out. They are lucky it was only 100 of the 800.

Army Reservist thinks he saw a mountain lion in an Arlington park

An attacking cougar gives no warning. They sneak up on you, jump on your back and bite your neck. Pepper spray would just give them a little extra spice for their meal!

I also question whether it was a cougar. They weigh more like 80 to 100 lbs. - which is quite a bit more than 25-30 lbs.

    The Sweet Potato/Yam Identity Crisis

Golden, Texas, which is about 80 miles East of Dallas, is known as the "Sweet potato capital of the United States". Last weekend was the annual sweet potato festival there.
