UPDATED: Cheech and Chong blaze into Dallas on November 1
Actually, Tommy Chong doesn't smoke pot anymore, though he did go to jail for selling glass pipes. I guess now that he's served his time he's free to cross state lines again. He probably needs to tour to pay his attorney's fees. I'm sure the whole ordeal gave him plenty of new material.

Ultramarathon Man: 50 Marathons, 50 States, 50 Days
Karnazes has nothing on the heroism of Sam Thompson, who set a record Karnazes couldn't beat by running more marathons in less time. Thompson also did so selflessly for the benefit of Hurricane Katrina victims rather than box office receipts.

Not to mention that Cornyn has 10 times as much money as Noriega.

Concluding @ 11:30 after two giant crowd singalongs -- "Careless Whisper" and "Freedom '90" he was forgiven by audiences for waiting 17 years. Thanks to Kathy Nealy for the primo seats three rows in front of Kenny Goss!

A not-so-ambiguous gay duo: "Beautiful" (which GM said he considers one of his best records) followed by "Outside" -- after which he bid Dallas goodnight more than two hours after he began. Encores are certain.

Point taken Clay213 - the backing vocalists are black, and on that song were singing in the African-American gospel choral style.
Roxanne was followed by a similar-sounding original, "Kissing A Fool." He then complained the A/C was too cold and affecting his voice (dropping a couple more F bombs). He then performed "Amazing" -- written for and dedicated to his partner Kenny.
My battery is almost dead...to be continued. -

Another cover, a lounge-y low-key cover of "Roxanne" by the Police, complete with video footage from Amsterdam.

After reaffirming the audience is f'ing amazing, he sang an a capella intro to a Nina Simone cover -- "Feeling Good" as recorded for the finale of Eli Stone.

After a 20 minute intermission, George Michael returned to the stage with the title track from his solo debut "Faith" and called Dallas his best f'ing audience.

Despite the irony of the lyrics under present-day circumstances, he revived the original arrangement of Wham's "Everything She Wants," followed by a gospel-tinged rendition of "One More Try" with harmony vocal from half a dozen African-American back-up singers.

Sounding as good as the day he recorded "Father Figure" GM told the Dallas audience that "Thanks to [his partner] Kenny [Goss], it's like coming home." He thanked his fans for their "f'ing amazing" 25 years of support, then promised to "work his ass off" for the next 2 1/2 to 3 hours before launching into "Hard Day" from Faith, a song excluded from his European tour.

Starting a full hour later than the "8pm prompt" on the event ticket, Michael emerged to "Fastlove," followed by "I'm your man" featuring vintage Wham! video on three floor-to-ceiling video screens.

Welcome to Oak Cliff chasdoo! The lovely folks at Gachet have wonderful coffee and are just a quick skip across the river.

Ghostbar
What's the opposite of adding a place to my favorites? I was hosting a delightful couple from Switzerland who wanted a downtown view. My favorite, Chaparral, closed a couple of months ago. Reunion Tower is being renovated. I believe the penthouse at The Stoneleigh is open only for special events, and the club at the Crescent is members-only. Plus, it's a Tuesday night and the AAC was dark (though there was a free movie screening of Jaws). We self-parked by Gachet and strolled through deserted Victory. The lobby was dead. Nobody was in line waiting to cross the chartreuse rope. Woman with the clipboard was ready to wave us on to an elevator when headset dude disapproved, citing "dress code" though none of us were wearing shorts, flip flops, jeans, or ball caps. My guests could've changed at their room in the Magnolia and returned, but instead we beat feet to Bar Belmont where we were happily accommodated just minutes before last call. I was embarrassed by the W. For people who claim to be in the "hospitality" industry, they couldn't have been less welcoming. As a native of Dallas, I was ashamed this total lack of Texas warmth could give global visitors a poor impression of my town.
So where can I take guests for a nice view of Big D up close? -

DWI: A social problem masquerading as a crime?
Some friends of mine recently bought a breathalyzer on Amazon to check the blood alcohol level of guests at at their parties and discourage friends from driving drunk. It was astonishing to see one woman with .14 after just a few drinks (but she is petite, thin, and doesn't drink frequently). I think driving is a privilege that should be revoked when people are reckless under any circumstances. However, alcoholism is a disease, and our society would benefit from treating and rehabilitating those who suffer rather than criminalizing their symptoms and warehousing them in our jails.

Is your junk in the trunk worthy of Antiques Roadshow?
Unlike Radiohead, this contest wasn't officially greenlighted until a few days before the taping. With more notice it still might've worked.

Dallas' new homeless shelter terminates contract with social services agency
The Bridge was never intended to be a homeless shelter. The city was always careful to call it a "homeless assistance center" designed to aid hundreds at a time only in the short-term until they were referred appropriately to substance abuse treatment, mental health care, etc. No matter who the city partners with, there will continue to be a backlog of homeless people until all neighborhoods community-wide have ample safe affordable housing.

Concert review: Tom Waits at the Palladium (June 23)
An acquaintance told me Waits required the venue to turn off the A/C and close the bars during his set so it would be quiet.

Tom Waits
After 100 minutes, the $100 show officially ended with "Misery," but encores included "9th & Hennepin" and the grand finale "Time."
