Dallas-based non-profit says state agency refuses to make community drug use data available online
Apparently artificial mind alteration continues unabated (and may even be up) despite all the holy crusades and pious rhetoric and lock-em-up crackdowns of the past several decades. As they say in N'Awlins, "you can make it illegal but you can't make it unpopular". It's also evident that the authorities feel the world would come to a sudden and bitter end (or at least their funding would be cut) if this were made known to the suckers....I mean taxpayers.

Dallas-Fort Worth schools attempt to integrate Bible literacy into curriculum
ibjc: read the f*ing Constitution. You want your kids learning what Noam Chomsky called "the most genocidal book in the cannon"? Then teach it to them yourself.
Do you really believe the sun revolves around the earth?

Didn't there used to be a similar prohibition against "interracial" couples?

Lewisville ISD says only print or broadcast media have right to cover the district
What exactly is the ostensible "reasoning" behind this. Sounds like they don't want anyone who's too independent reporting on them.

Dallas Latino leaders upset with illegal alien Halloween costume sold at Target
The Irish used to be the second-largest illegal group, but no one got too uspet about them. I know lots of Poles who get 3-month tourist visas and work illegally for the whole 3 months. I'm sure the same goes on in any immigrant community.

Seems to me that LULAC would have more of a point if the costuem were some kind of racist anti-Latino bash. It doesn't seem all that mean-spirited (and might even be said to mock the anti-immigration knuckle-draggers). It looks petty to be getting upset about this costume.

Put the state politicians who brought this unconstitutional BS into the time machine and send them back to the Middle Ages. Or just send them a copy of the Constitution.

New Texas traffic, criminal laws set to go into effect September 1
Since most laws seem to be made by morons, it works out the same.

A Roman philosopher once said that you can measure the level of decay of a society by how many laws it has on its books.
Utah Phillips, American philosopher once opined that laws were unnecessary: "Good folks don't need'em and bad folks ignore'em."

Girl, 13, ends up in Dallas County Jail with adult inmates after giving false date of birth
Now that's more like it. BTW, It's spelled S-O-W.
Scott, you should know by now that I'm way too cool for the prom. But we could hang out in the parking lot with some beers and make fun of all the dorks that ARE going. It's 2 days late because some of us have what are referred to as "lives". -

So, legally, it's OK for a 17-year-old to be behind bars with adults, but not OK for a 17-year-old to have a drink?

Lewisville cheerleaders accused of using drugs at weekend retreat
Peter--No, I missed the whole rave scene by several decades. I was lucky enough to be in my teens and 20s in the 1970s and '80s, though, and we were regularly told the stuff we were doing would result in death. Are there statistics on this somewhere that don't come from the gummint? The anti-alcohol people also posit death as occurring more often than it should from drinking.
Travis--lots of stuff back in the day was "cut" with speed, etc, too. There was a surprisingly savvy market and word got around quickly about who had good stuff and who didn't.

Momzilla's onto something when she observes that it was a lot harder to get arrested in the '70s than it is now. What say we do something to reverse that, like stop treating every social issue as if it can be dealt with by having a bunch of criminal penalties piled onto it.

Learning from mistakes: I don't know a single person my age who partied his/her ass off when younger who acts as if they regretted it or says they wish someone had lowered the boom on us. Most of them laugh when they tell their war stories about the time they were so wasted .....

Sixteen is 21 now? Au contraire, 21 is now 16. I was buying beer when I was 16 and never had to resort to a fake ID; now 20-year-olds have to sneak around like naughty children to get a drink.
I don't have much experience with Ecstasy, but I think it is for things other than sex. Is this cheerleading camp coed? Or did you envision some girl-on-girl action? "Horny Teen Cheerleaders on X"? Parents who really want their kids to "do time" probably shouldn't be parents. I made a modest proposal on another thread concerning teenagers that everyone between 13 and 18 be put into "relocation camps" so they can't cause anyone any problems with their growing pains. Now THAT'S a proactive stance. -

Jtmbls: I wasn't being sarcastic. I must have been out sick the day we learned choosing to escape reality was a bad thing. Most people I know do it in various ways. Teenagers want to do what adults do. No one should have to pass a drug test to get a job. what you do off the job is your bidness not the employers--unless they want to pay you 24/7.

Maybe we could just put everyone between the ages of 13 and 18 into concentration camps and release them when it's time for college/a job/the military.
If that proves successful, we could then move on to employing the same strategy on other inconvenient demographics, like the elderly. -

I've always thought it was hilarious that the punishment for using drugs, etc. was being suspended from school activities...so they have more time on their hands to do drugs!!! Jtmbls is right: they probably should have been more discreet. And how exactly were today's crop of parents, teachers, administrators, politicians and cops recreating when they were teens????? It'd be interesting to hear everyone stand up and honestly testify before they decide on a punishment for these kids.

DeSoto trying yet again to legalize beer and wine sales
So do people in Desoto not drink? Or must they simply drive to another town when they want to buy alcohol? And how many of the "antis" drink secretly behind closed doors?

TABC chief apologizes for raid of Rainbow Lounge
So was it an inspection or a raid? I would say there's a huge difference. Since we live in an age of militarized police forces, could the folks in blue have been just a teensy bit overzealous?? Here in allegedly liberal NY, they conduct Prohibition-style raids, with dozens of cops, for reported infractions that could easily be remedied with a phone call, or a low-key visit by one or two inpsectors. But these raids are theater intended to remind the drinking public that they're considered quasi-criminals. I seem to have heard before that in your jolly little state, one can be arrested for public intoxication INSIDE a bar. Let's hope that doesn't become a model for the rest of the country.
