Eatzi's in Grapevine previews new store to local shoppers
Teresa, you're right. There is already the Grapevine Vintage Railroad running out of the existing station, offering weekend trips to Fort Worth as well as other specially themed excursions (like the New Vintage Wine Train) seasonally. And Grapevine does have some cool independent restaurants and watering holes, including such gems as Mi Dia, Buon Giorno Coffee House, El Taco H, Weinberger's Delicatessen, BreadHaus, Into the Glass, Farina's, Main St. Bread, South Prairie Oyster Bar, Big Fish Seafood, and others. Oh, and don't forget the only location of Biscuits Cafe outside of the Pacific Northwest. Now, if only Grapevine could get a little more independent, locally sourced fine dining (something Lucia-esque or Bolsa-esque would be nice) and a food truck park.... And the addition of Bob's did nothing for Grapevine, in my mind. The Kirby's Steakhouse across Hwy 114 (technically in Southlake) is far, far better, both in terms of the steaks and the service, based on my experiences.

I'm not sure Eatzi's alone is a catalyst for turning Grapevine into the next Bishop Arts, and I actually think Grapevine is already well on its way (if not ahead of Bishop Arts) in some ways. Main St is vibrant and becoming even more so with good restaurants, shops, the new glockenspiel, etc. In the near future, the TEX Rail station will connect Grapevine to other passenger rail stations all along the Cotton Belt Line. And once the SH 26 bridge over Big Bear Creek is complete, it will be possible to take the Cotton Belt hike/bike trail virtually all the way to Fort Worth. Throw in Grapevine's seasonal festivals and winemaking heritage, plus proximity to Lake Grapevine, and I think there's a lot to be excited about in Grapevine.

Peter Billingsley will play the plucky young entrepreneur. Duh.

Concert review: Ben Folds and a Piano, with Kate Miller-Heidke, at House of Blues (May 9)
Pretty spot-on review of a highly enjoyable and satisfying show. One tiny nit: Ben Folds actually went back to his earliest Ben Folds Five material, playing several songs from the albums Ben Folds Five ("The Last Polka") and Whatever and Ever Amen ("Kate" and "Steven's Last Night in Town").

Ben Folds with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra
In short, this was a good gig, with several outstanding moments, but also a few discordant notes (vocals getting swallowed up by the orchestra's music, or the orchestra seeming a bit out of sync with Ben's rapid-fire piano plinking).
Highlights included (as usual) some of Ben's in-between-song commentary about song origins; a few songs that seemed particularly well-served or creatively reinterpreted by the Ben-orchestra combo, such as "Effington," "Narcolepsy," and "Smoke"; and two new numbers featuring lyrics penned by Nick Hornby (absolutely wry stuff from a soon-to-be-released album).
Ben conducted audience participation vocals on "Not the Same" and "Army" (always fun for the crowd), and he closed the encores with a couple of solo tunes ("Rockin' the Suburbs" and the aforementioned "Army") after dismissing the orchestra. He certainly left the audience wanting more after the two-hour show, and my sense was that although they truly appreciated the orchestra's game efforts, more solo stuff would have better slaked their desire.

Nice review, Mike. Already looking forward to next year's Blue Shoe Blues Fest. Appreciate the creative photo credit on the Texas Johnny Brown pic, too.

Brewery Tour and Tasting
This is the best deal in town... $5 for three high quality beers, live music and a good crowd of folks. Highly recommend the Ugly Pug (a schwarzbier) and the Winter Warmer (a dark ale), the only Rahr beers I've tried so far. My wife endorses the blonde ale.

Possible tornado damages homes in Colleyville
I understand they have now declared that is was an F1 tornado in Colleyville, a little over a mile from our house. I drove past the damage on my way to work this morning - saw some split trees, roof damage, a neighborhood tennis court fence that had been ripped down, and some scattered debris. The damage was very localized, though, from what I could see. I can also report that the tornado sirens in Colleyville sound odd - almost like wind whistling through the eaves, rather than like the sirens we used to hear in Dallas.

Agreed with that sentiment. By the way, some friends and I will be visiting the Rahr Brewery for the first time on Saturday. Any recommendations, vis-a-vis best beers or what to expect of the brewery tour?

Cafe Italia
This review is actually for the location on Ira Woods Ave/Hwy 26, which needs to be added to the Pegasus site. Went to this restaurant last Friday with a group of six, and we all had a wonderful and very reasonably priced meal. Standout dishes included the escargot and caprese appetizers, and among the entrees, the lobster ravioli and tortellini michael angelo (both with pink sauces), eggplant parmesan and veal marsala all received rave reviews from our group. The amply portioned entrees came in around $10-$15 apiece, and wine was BYOB... making this restaurant truly an outstanding value. The tiramisu was also heavenly. My only quibble was with the bread, which was rather pedestrian compared with the other hearty, well-executed Sicilian fare. The restaurant was packed, so the atmosphere was lively but not oppressively loud. Despite the crowds, we were promptly seated (we had a reservation) and never lacked for attention from our charming waiter. I understand the owners are relocating to a larger space next door, so they should be able to accommodate more customers very soon.

Feedstore BBQ
Tried the BBQ triumvirate - sliced brisket, pork ribs and sausage - and was very pleased with the quality and flavor of each meat. The three-meat platter came with a generous helping of brisket and sausage (the latter from Muenster) - though I could have used more than two of the meat-falling-off-the-bone ribs. Dessert choices included three types of cobbler, so a friend and I sampled two - pecan and peach. Of the two, the peach was more conventional in style, with the pecan cobbler resembling a pecan log with a little syrup (though my friend enjoyed it nevertheless). Next time, I'll be trying the blackberry, to see if it equals the peach for homemade goodness. The restaurant was filled with families enjoying themselves, and several getting large pans to go - I chose to transport my large to-go portion in my satisfied belly.

Concert review: The Smithereens at Glass Cactus (August 20)
As much as I also love the Old 97's, Mike, I'm pretty sure the Smithereens played "House We Used to Live In" (not "House That Used to Be"). And, by the way, it was a great extended jam, no matter the title. Pretty impressive show, and I agree that the band was awfully engaged with the audience... not to mention pretty tight in their sound.

The Ice Cream Place
Thanks, TG. By the way, for anyone who goes, the ice cream I had (with the chocolate-covered pecans and caramel chunks), was called Sunken Treasure. I highly recommend it. I was thinking my wife had the Elephant Ears, but hers might have actually been the Moose Tracks. Either way, it was very good.

The Ice Cream Place
Very impressive ice cream shop in the western part of Southlake. I tried an ice cream with a vanilla base, plus chocolate covered pecans and caramel laced throughout. Delicious! My wife enjoyed the Elephant Ears ice cream, made from a vanilla base packed with chocolate-covered peanut butter cups. Not crowded if you hit it at dinnertime. Wait, this is supposed to be dessert, not dinner?!

I won't speculate on what led to 62 Main's closing, but I have no doubts that the citizens of Colleyville have sophisticated palates and the ability to support well-executed concepts. Colleyville_Customer, do you have other local favorites in Grapevine, C'ville or Southlake to recommend?
