Nice review, Mike. Already looking forward to next year's Blue Shoe Blues Fest. Appreciate the creative photo credit on the Texas Johnny Brown pic, too.

This promises to be fantastic, based on the soundchecks. Get out here, everybody!

This is the best deal in town... $5 for three high quality beers, live music and a good crowd of folks. Highly recommend the Ugly Pug (a schwarzbier) and the Winter Warmer (a dark ale), the only Rahr beers I've tried so far. My wife endorses the blonde ale.

I understand they have now declared that is was an F1 tornado in Colleyville, a little over a mile from our house. I drove past the damage on my way to work this morning - saw some split trees, roof damage, a neighborhood tennis court fence that had been ripped down, and some scattered debris. The damage was very localized, though, from what I could see. I can also report that the tornado sirens in Colleyville sound odd - almost like wind whistling through the eaves, rather than like the sirens we used to hear in Dallas.

Thanks, Alex. Those insights are quite helpful!

Agreed with that sentiment. By the way, some friends and I will be visiting the Rahr Brewery for the first time on Saturday. Any recommendations, vis-a-vis best beers or what to expect of the brewery tour?

As much as I also love the Old 97's, Mike, I'm pretty sure the Smithereens played "House We Used to Live In" (not "House That Used to Be"). And, by the way, it was a great extended jam, no matter the title. Pretty impressive show, and I agree that the band was awfully engaged with the audience... not to mention pretty tight in their sound.

In short, this was a good gig, with several outstanding moments, but also a few discordant notes (vocals getting swallowed up by the orchestra's music, or the orchestra seeming a bit out of sync with Ben's rapid-fire piano plinking).
Highlights included (as usual) some of Ben's in-between-song commentary about song origins; a few songs that seemed particularly well-served or creatively reinterpreted by the Ben-orchestra combo, such as "Effington," "Narcolepsy," and "Smoke"; and two new numbers featuring lyrics penned by Nick Hornby (absolutely wry stuff from a soon-to-be-released album).
Ben conducted audience participation vocals on "Not the Same" and "Army" (always fun for the crowd), and he closed the encores with a couple of solo tunes ("Rockin' the Suburbs" and the aforementioned "Army") after dismissing the orchestra. He certainly left the audience wanting more after the two-hour show, and my sense was that although they truly appreciated the orchestra's game efforts, more solo stuff would have better slaked their desire.
