Dallas needs alternative housing for chronically homeless and ill
This program is located currently at Mountain View apartments in South Dallas. It was located at City Inn Suites off of Ewing near the Dallas zoo, unknown to elected officials. DFPS has stated they don't investigate cases where there is multiple abuse/neglect of disabled adults. Also, in the case of the self admitted pedophile, according to the Dallas branch of DFPS, the indivduals privacy superceded any rights of the children and their parents. I can only think that since the children were 4 African Americans, ages 12 and under and the self admitted pedophile is caucasion, that the incidents with the children was buried. No one will ever know if anything ever happened to those kids.

Dallas now only #2 in national crime rankings
Chief Kunkle is right. The new reporting system where police officers decide whether a crime has been commited or not, has a lot to do with the new ranking. I was attacked by 2 armed men at my job. I held them at bay after they had broke the door trying to get in. Police said no crime was commited because they didn't take anyhting, (including my life) even though there was property damage.

Takeaways from the failure of the Plaza Inn deal in Dallas
You hit the nail on the head Kevin. In many successful housing projects which include "permanent supportive housing" projects, Neighborhood Associations were in charge of the interview process as to who qualified under their criteria to have a home.

With homeless, Dallas usually gets what we intend...
If we find a man frozen to death on a park bench, certainly we can find a justification for it. If 1/3 of all homeless adults are veterans, certainly we can find a justification for it. If a domestic violence victim and her children can't get into a shelter because the mom didn't have all the right documents when she fled, certainly we can find a justification for it. As long as it happens to another and not to ourselves, we can find justification that makes inhumanity o.k.

Dallas homeless: The good, the bad, and the ugly
I once purchased table (Bar Cart) and could've paid an expert to have it built. I was positive that I could do it on my own. I did not read the directions for putting the table together and in the end built it backwards. It still worked as a table. But it was backwards nonetheless. Advocacy many times is about knowing when to yes, when to say no and when to ask others with experience to take the reins, but Advocacy is always about speaking up when "injuries are very few". Because it is the few which we are fighting for. Take a note that we should always tell of success stories and pat ourselves on the back, but never forget that some mistakes are the result from our own stubborn egos. Anyone else here ever learn this lesson?

Dallas hates the homeless
It is very easy to use our vocabulary to demonize any group. The article doesn't tell you that this building on Park Ave. is not only in a very bad location (Even if the Stewpot wasn't there) but also really isn't a building you can do anyhting with.(No Windows)Even in the best economic times this building, as historic as it is, just doesn't fit into the Downtown plan. Real-estate in downtown either needs to be centralized or near the American Airlines arena to be attractive to any potential leasor or buyer. This building regardless of it's neighbors, just doesn't fit the bill...location, location, location...

Advocating for mutual respect and communication among partners in solving homelessness in Dallas
At a conferance in Boston, the homeless gathered from around the country and even some came from Canada and England. I will never forget what one individual from New York told me. "I might not have a diploma from a major college, but I do have a PHD in Streetology." While we were all different in many ways, Streetology was the common bond of suffering among us. As I child I was taught good communication is 10% talking and 90% listening. Myself as other homeless, built our own home from cardboard boxes because we had the wisdom to know that we can't fit into someone elses' box. Wisdom does not suffer others; only individual intellect does. Hopefully wisdom will come to those who say they are the authority over our homeless lives. I cannot remember all their names and today cannot see all their faces, but The Bridge will survive regardless of the issues because within the foundation lies the footprints of thousands of homeless here in Dallas who dreamed of something better. Thank you Karen for your comments and work.

Looks like it'll be June 2010 before we have information about the progress of the UNT pharmacy school in Dallas.
