From the DMA, more discounts this weekend:

Victor and Russ, here is some pseudo-official clarification on that one, just so we are all on the same page as to who everyone is referring to:

Oncor Energy tells residents to leave porch lights on to show you have power
An official word from Oncor:
"Residential customers don't pay bills to Oncor, as BillUSA99 correctly pointed out. Regardless of which retail electric provider you use, your power is delivered over Oncor's poles and wires. Oncor is a publicly regulated utility and every penny Oncor makes is authorized by state government. Oncor is as separate from retail electric providers... with different investors and a different board of directors. Leaving a light on helps Oncor crews quickly assess where help is needed to ensure any neighbors without power gets it restored as safely and swiftly as possible -- and who doesn't want that?"

Chili's in downtown Fort Worth closing on January 26
SWEET. I hope the two are replaced with non-chain restaurants or bars. Maybe the Chili's isn't doing well because nobody likes eating there.

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharoahs opens Friday at the Dallas Museum of Art
I went back to the exhibit with family, and I gotta say, for the love of God take the train. Parking is a nightmare and expensive. That coupled with the already sky-high ticket prices somewhat diminishes the overall value of the experience.

2008 elections in Dallas-Fort Worth ruled by same-old incumbents and Republicans
For about 5 minutes on the news last night I noticed that Obama was actually ahead of McCain in Texas. We all assumed of course that Austin was probably the first to report, but it was still funny.

The Sweet Potato/Yam Identity Crisis
Thank you Scott, for clearing up the "yam scam." So now we know. If you want true yams, check out your closest Asian grocer. I wonder if the people over at Central Market know the difference...

Wild Art: Photos of the Alliance Air Show, Swirll Winery and pics around town
This just in: I got a download today that helps enormously with RAW workflow. (Thank you David) It instantly pulls jpgs from all your RAW files. And it's free (we like free). If you shoot in RAW + JPG this will be your best friend and will save you a bunch of card space.
All you do is register and you will get the link to download it. Then follow the instructions in the Read Me file and try it out. It's like magic!

As far as shooting in theaters all I can say is that shooting in RAW can help with the noise that often comes with using a high ISO. You can reduce the noise a little better without the image looking too terribly soft and muddled.
Aside from that, you can buy a new lens. I know everyone loves a good zoom on their lens, but a fixed 50mm lens with a low f-stop (1.8 or 1.4) is worth the money and makes a world of difference. And the 1.8 lens (at least for Canon) should be under $200. It's a cheapo though so don't drop it. The faster lenses are also useful when shooting concerts (although it helps to be in closer up, yay press pit). While I always get a bit of lens envy standing next to the other photogs with long lenses, I stick to my little 50 and my photos come out just as nice imo.

Haunted House Review: The Cutting Edge in Fort Worth
You aren't allowed to bring cameras into the haunted houses, and this one is a particular stickler. (I think I forgot to mention you can't bring in purses or bags of any kind.) I tried to bring a recorder in for audio, but no dice. Apparently they are afraid of other haunted houses stealing ideas and such.

Dallas to double downtown security cameras
Clay213: Is there any evidence of a correlation? Have there been arrests made or convictions made in conjunction with camera footage?
According to the article that we linked to, "The cameras have caught on tape incidents such a robbery and the takedown of a man wanted for sexually assaulting a child."

I can vouch for Guy Forsyth. He used to be the house band at Antone's in Austin back when that was my stomping ground. This should be a great show!

I had the same experience with the grapple Pavel, if it makes you feel any better. For some silly reason I thought the grapple would be juicier than your regular apple. I found the opposite to be true.
