Best Bites: Dining out in Dallas-Fort Worth July 11
I need to get my rear end down to Bishop Arts District! It's getting way cooler than Dallas other restaurant rows.

Annie Wong, revered Thai chef and Dallas restaurateur, dies in Thailand
Liberty was the first restaurant that boasted not only authentic Asian flavors and noodle dishes (beyond Pad Thai), but also an incredibly hip environment. Without Annie it might have been just another concept restaurant, all flash and no substance. Without Liberty paving the way, Dallas might have stayed well behind the Asian food curve. Thank you for reporting this. Annie Wong should be remembered, and honored.

I was really enjoying the lively (albeit geeky) debate over water and pizza dough, until pizzalover got scarily hostile, resorting to name calling and hurling insults. That's unfortunate. Really, I liked all the dough/water talk not so much for the content, but for the passion the writers seem to have about pizza and crust. It's that kind of zeal that fosters a "food city" environment -- one that actually spurs food entrepreneurs to take risks, open quirky joints, open authentic ethnic joints. Pizzalover should take a hard look at the "my momma would be proud of what I just wrote" label on the submit button before every writing again. Just because we write anonymously on the net doesn't mean we shouldn't be guided by a shred of decency. Scary how anonymity can bring out the worst in ourselves. We are writing to other people, not for ourselves. Save the anger for your journal/diary.

Glad to see another REAL pizza joint in town --especially one where I can bring my own wine. Actually, I like a dry sparkling Prosecco with pizza. But my Italian friend says that in Italy they always drink BEER with pizza.

Mexican restaurant La Joya opens in Irving
Can't wait to check it out. The Metroplex is lacking in authentic regional Mexican food -- ironic, since there are so many immigrants from all over Mexico here. But hey, it takes $$$ to get a restaurant going. Let's hope that local diners will break out of their Tex Mex rut and give the REAL DEAL a chance.

Coffee Class #1: Coffee Origins
The Coffee origins class sounds cool. White Rock Coffee is awesome It's hard to imagine going back to Starbucks after sampling White Rock's Coffee. Basically, Starbucks roasts the daylights out of everything, to create a uniform product -- that tastes burnt. That's why they sell so many lattes -- their black coffee is so awful that you really need to mix a ton of milk and sugar in it to avoid gagging. The real test of good coffee is if it tastes wonderful black. White Rock's coffee rocks.

Let's make a better Dallas Farmers Market
Finally, people are waking up to the fact that Dallas is woefully behind in advancing a REAL farmers' market. And finally someone is writing about this. No city can claim a food scene that's worth its salt unless there's locally grown produce available to chefs and home cooks. Austin does a better job of this. Look at Cooking Light's list of most liveable cities; they selected cities based on their restaurant scene, parks, and farmer's markets. Of course Dallas didn't make their list. What's pathetic is that even cities like Kansas City beat us out. It will take time, but it won't happen if left to the City. It's time for some grass roots action. As long as the City controls the Dallas Farmers' Market, progress will come at a snail's pace. If you privatized the Dallas Farmer's Market, people who care deeply about attracting real farmers would make it happen faster.

Launching it softly, with this post
Mike..maybe it just takes some time for it to show up under the Fans tab.
