UPDATED x2: Greenville Avenue crusader Avi Adelman cited for misdemeanor assault

Man, is this the kind of stuff I have to get Hansel to do on video in order to get more of you to watch his Web show? :-[

King Tut exhibit at Dallas Museum of Art didn't come close to drawing the 1 million it forecast

I thought it was pretty pricey for what I felt was an "okay" exhibit. (I think $25 for an adult ticket would have been the most fair price.)

I wonder what the ticket prices were in the other cities where the show was held. Perhaps a lower ticket price was a factor in hitting 1 million visitors in those cities.

Trey Garrison: Why I oppose the people's hotel

Please don't try to frame this as a right vs. left (or GOP vs. Democratic) issue. I know lots of people who are ardent liberals who are against this hotel; they feel the city should be spending its (the taxpayers') money on fixing the streets, schools, parks and paying police and fire services more.

If anything, it could be argued that the city spending money to build a hotel with taxpayer money is "socialism for the rich."

This issue is really all about the good ol' boy network that still runs Dallas.

Dallas strip club to hold job fair

What if you combined a strip (umm, I mean "gentlemen's") club with the collective office-space concept of Cohabitat?

That'd be really convenient when it comes to entertaining VCs visiting from out of town.

In case any Dallasite readers here aren't aware, SWC Mall was formerly known as Red Bird Mall. It's becoming afflicted with dead mall syndrome, hence the concern over its future in this economic environment (that has been challenging for all malls, as news this week about the bankruptcy of the second largest mall properties owner attests).

Dallas-based Neiman Marcus has another round of layoffs

The flagship store/company office building in downtown is interesting to visit -- though it feels like wandering through a mausoleum.

The first ads from Vote No!, aka Build the Hotel

Remember, folks, in Dallas, a vote for "no" means "yes" and vice versa. If you're for the hotel, vote "no". If you're against it, vote "yes". And when she says "no," she means "yes". Got it? Good.

I'm a "no" on the "No" campaign's marketing, which means "yes" to the hotel on which I'm a "no" even though I'm a "no" on Prop 1

"...why is it that every time Dallas has a referendum, 'No' means 'Yes' to the project planned and vice-versa?"

Are you seriously asking or just being funny, Mike?

It's to trick/confuse Dallas voters into voting for said project (which is what happened with the toll road vote). It's a sleazy tactic -- there's a name for it, which escapes my memory right now -- and it works.

The cynic in me says this hotel vote will pass, because of this tactic.

Now all that's missing from that picture is a giant eagle head looming over the cityscape -- with a tear flowing from its eye.

So they're asking $1100 per month to rent a space to live in what is, essentially, an outlet mall?

The Trinity River Project - so much work to be done

I have long since concluded that we will all be dead of old age before anything happens (for better or for worse) with the Trinity. Unless you are Ross Perot Jr. or another influential rich person, nothing we do or say will change that.

Also, I've observed there has been a persistent reality distortion regarding the Trinity. It is not a "river" anymore, and hasn't been for decades now. It is a flood plain to prevent downtown and East Dallas from being flooded over, and that's how it has been engineered by the Corps. Yet all sides in the Trinity project debate seem to always ignore this simple fact.

It will never be this flowing river with yachts and riverboats on it, and restaurants dotting along it, like a picturesque scene you normally see from a Coastal city. (Dallas is a way, way IN-LAND city.) Both the Corps and nature prevent this from ever happening.

We're better off fantasizing over how to fix DISD (which is a far more doable and realistic goal to achieve) -- or encasing downtown in a futuristic geodesic dome.

    Spiral Diner & Bakery

I agree with Mike on this one. I just don't dig the whole "meat substitute" pretense behind many vegetarian dishes (not just Spiral's menu, but what you'll find at other veggie places). Why not eat tasty vegetables (or other non-meat items) in their original form and appreciate them for what they are? It seems to me that so-called vegetarians who like eating meat substitute dishes still are drawn to meat and don't particularly enjoy eating non-meat foods (veggies, fruits, nuts, etc.) to begin with. It all comes off as self-defeating and slightly hypocritical.

Also, many of Spiral Diner's dishes contain wheat ingredients (to substitute for meat). So if you have a gluten allergy be aware of this.

That said, I do enjoy Spiral Diner's desserts and smoothies. I would recommend these first.

Texas State Legislature may ban straight ticket voting

I'm surprised, too. Really, I don't think this would help the Republicans in Texas but, instead, hurt them further, and could backfire on them. I've had this impression for a long time now that Republican voters in Texas are more likely to vote straight ticket, and never consider any other candidate if they are not Republicans.

I suspect this law change is being attempted on the assumption that Republican voters are more "patient" and diligent voters when it comes to voting in the booth. But as we saw in the election, lots of Democrats came out in droves and were willing to wait to early vote.

Rick’s Cabaret in Dallas to be converted to largest all-nude strip club in Texas

I am having a hard time imagining how large "25,000 square foot" is. Is that comparable to a grocery store? A Target? A Super Wal-Mart?

George Bush's post-presidency return to Dallas will be pretty cushy

Any bets on how soon he will sell the Crawford ranch?

I wonder what this city will be like having to deal with his presence, especially if he's not going to be traveling much on speaking gigs (is he going to get any offers anytime soon)? I just don't see him wanting to travel or speak publicly much. (Neither seem to be activities he's ever cared for doing.) So what the hell is he going to do with his time while living in Dallas?

Appropriately enough, he's living in probably the only part of Dallas county which voted for McCain. (Obama handily won Dallas county, by the way.)

UPDATED: Dallas City Council bans smoking in bars and pool halls

There's the argument that's already been stated here that many bars may see an increase in revenue -- from non-smokers who decide to start visiting and hanging out in the businesses more. And casual smokers, who aren't able to smoke inside, might wind up buying more drinks to make up for their unfulfilled nicotine "fix". In other words, bars could stand to make more money off of booze sales. (They hardly make money from cigarettes.)

Most of us here I imagine know of a divey type of bar, maybe we even patronize them from time to time, smoker and non-smoker alike... you know the kind of place, where most of the patrons are smokers. Places like these will be affected the most by the ban. Maybe they will even lose business and close, due also to this economy. But I doubt the City Council cares about places like these -- or the majority of the people who frequent bars in Dallas County either. Basically, divey, smokey places are regarded by certain segments of our city as being "lower class" and blights upon the areas where they are located, so if this smoking ban shuts them down, even better, is what the Council and these people feel.

As for the Addison argument (that people will go to bars in Addison more), the admittedly few times I've been to the more well known Addison bars (like The Londoner and Flying Saucer), I didn't see many smokers. Looks like Addison people are more health conscious, hence, why the city doesn't impose such a restrictive smoking ban. They don't feel it's necessary, probably.

2008 elections in Dallas-Fort Worth ruled by same-old incumbents and Republicans

Obama won all four of the major Texas cities: Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio...

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25381335

They look like blue islands in a sea of red. Dallas is completely surrounded in red, and its closest blue counterpart in the state is Austin.

I'm not holding my breath for the Dallas Morning News to report this fact, or for that paper's editors to acknowledge the significance of Obama taking Dallas -- which will be the future home of the Bush Presidential Library.

John Cornyn elected to U.S. Senate seat

    Obama won Dallas County...

    Obama: 421,312 McCain: 307,608

To compare, Bush won Dallas County in 2004 by only a little over 9,000 votes.

This is significant because Dallas will be the future home of the Bush Presidential Library -- and now Dallas has gone decisively blue.

    Howard Wen's comment on:

Early voting numbers hit record highs across North Texas

Most of the Dallas Democrats in the 1960s became Reagan Democrats and then Republicans in the 1980s.

And most of the City Council already is Democratic. But ever notice that we don't know for sure what each person's political affiliation is? And during mayoral campaigns, you never see "Republican" or "Democrat" being bandied about? There's a bit of an unwritten rule in our city council's government that they're not supposed to represent (at least blatantly) any one particular political party.
