    Concert Review: Edgefest 16

By the way...the "If I only could, I'd make a deal with God" song that Placebo finished with was a Kate Bush cover song. I'm probably one of the only people in the audience who caught onto that (being old enough to actually know that song...ahem). Placebo's version, TOTALLY rocked and made me truly love them. Is that song on their CD?

Totally agree with the Muse assessment...they completely rocked...were the only band that I braved the mosh area for. Having seen them at Nokia a few months ago, I was not sure that they could hold an Edgefest crowds attention, but they were spectacular! They were actually BETTER at this kind of venue than in a smaller venue...much more energy and more deviation from the recorded version of the songs.

I wish I had known about some of the other acts playing on the 2nd and 3rd stage so that I would've seen them. That's my one big complaint: they should have some kind of scrolling sign or something telling who is playing on which stage when cuz I never could figure that out, oh yeah...and shorter margarita lines!!!!!

Concert Review: 30 Seconds To Mars

Ditto on everything Chad says about the show. It was quite an experience. I have to say though that having THAT many bands in one night is just too much for me. We did watch some of the opening acts, but when you are really there to see one particular band, it is painful to have to listen to band after band after band.

So to occupy our time we found some great diversions. First, we spotted Jared Leto in the crowd, standing just a few feet from the CD boothe where the band would sign CDs after the show. We were so entertained by the fact that he was standing right there in the middle of everyone, but no one was going up to get his autograph or talk to him. We spent about an hour partaking in this little watching game, only to have this "Un-Leto" character walk past us in the crowd later as the band was on the stage. DOH!!! Talk about feeling stupid. He definitely had pulled off the look alike trick quite well.

We then went upstairs and got busted trying to go up to the balcony, which was apparently for bands only. Some guys at the bar pointed and laughed "ah hah...busted, bet you feel stupid." Actually no, cause we didn't know we couldn't go up there in the first place, but my face probably did turn a little red.

The other fun time-waster was standing in the line for the mens' restroom. The womens' line was 20 gals deep, so some crafty women had deemed it acceptable to use the stall in the mens room and let the guys use the urinals. Was amusing to watch the perplexed looks on the guys faces as they came around the corner and saw us standing there.

As far as the music...my ears bled a little bit, but I got everything I expected to get out of the show (as well as one of the bands' drumsticks...thanks Chad!) Leto's stage presence and vocal abilities are truly rockstar quality and they are one of the only bands that I approach groupie status with. I was nervous about being let down, but left just wanting more! Can't wait to see them again!

If you're protesting your DCAD valuation...

Thanks for the link! I'm on my way to do this today. They have my home valued for more than I have it on the market for!! AGH! Have tried to sell for over a year and reduced the price 3 times, so they are out of their minds with these values.

    Fry Street Fairs Well

The Cool Beans thing really sucked for the four bands that were supposed to play there in the afternoon and then for us as well. We were booked to play at 10pm and thought "wow, we really scored getting to play the night of Fry St. Fair cause that was just totally by chance". Instead, it was probably the worst time to try to play there. We got there and set up to play at 10pm, 10 minutes prior to the show the fire marshall shut the patio down due to something like overoccupancy...they just seemed to have their sites set on Cool Beans that day. Was a huge disappointment for us and I know for the other bands that didn't get to play there (I got to meet Bradley and I really wish I had gotten to see him play as well.) It's hard when something like that happens...you walk away feeling quite dejected and not really knowing who to be upset with. I'm glad that the rest of the fair was such a huge success though!

    Wall of Sound Clarification

Wow, this post really shows what an amazing person you are. Your positivity and honesty is the main reason why texasgigs.com is one of the only websites that I surf to almost every single day. I think most of us who are functioning on any level within the Dallas music community reach that level of frustration, exhaustion and annoyance that you reached the other day. When I read your first post I could completely relate to a lot of what you were saying.

Adding the second post, to clarify things and clear the air, that you were coming from a place of that frustration and to make sure that it didn't hurt anyone that it shouldn't, is such a mature stance.

Thanks for making the Dallas music scene a more pleasant and positive environment to function within. Thanks for sacrificing your time and energy to do the things you do. Most of all, thanks for not just being someone who slams everyone and everything without being fair about it. It is SO refreshing!

    Dallas Observer Music Awards

Hey Mike, Thanks SOOO much, that really helps (the links for the albums that is). Also, I totally agree with Frank about the limited categories. What gives with that? Why is acoustic/folk the same category? Not all acoustic bands do folk music. Why isn't there any pop? What about just plain ol' "rock"? pop/rock? (scratching my head).

    Dallas Observer Music Awards

Trying to be a good little voter, I'm desperately searching for a listing of albums released by Dallas bands this year...any suggestions as to how to find these? Or should I just put in Burden Brothers since they're gonna win anyway?
