Does anyone have any recommendations for restaurant week dining? I've found that it's not really a "bargain" when the portion sizes are reduced to the size of an appetizer, and you find yourself hungry afterwards. We tried Roy's last year, and were pleasantly surprised with the selection and portions. Anyone else have ideas?

Live Oak Street exit on US-75 Southbound closed till 2009 due to DART Green Line construction

I live in the neighborhood, and I've yet to see any workers or equipment in the vicinity of the closed lane at this point, so what gives? I'm all for keeping workers safe, but the time lost by thousands of commuters every day should take precedence at this stage in the game.

Baseball As America exhibit coming to Dallas' Museum of Nature & Science

I saw this exhibit in New York several years ago. It's fascinating, even for passive baseball fans like me. Definitely recommended!

Conceraunt Review: House of Blues Gospel Brunch

Reading this reminds me of a family trip to Disney World as a child and watching the Country Bear Jamboree...communal seating, average food, canned entertainment, paying extra for mimosas (OK, maybe not that last part). Just confirms my initial impression of the HOB as musical Disneyland. If I'm going to spend $100 on brunch, I'll just go to the Mansion.

    Weekend = garage sales

I'd love to see the site eventually be able to differentiate estate sales from garage sales. The quality of items is vastly different, and it's really useful to me to see right away whether it's an estate sale vs. a garage sale. Just a thought for the future...

Paciugo rolls out new veggie flavored gelato

I second the vote for black sesame! It's always a must for me when I visit California, and I'd love to be able to get it locally. I also loved an avocado flavor paciugo served once at Savor Dallas, but I never did see it in the stores. Keep up the good work!

Third to the sigh...I met my husband there, too. At least, we THINK that's where we met! Happened so long ago, our memories are a bit cloudy :)

Allen on top-5 list of cities where homes have ridiculous number of bedrooms

I do agree the bedroom argument has it's problems...some families are just larger than others. What I would be curious about is the total square footage of these houses...somehow I doubt that any of these bedrooms would be mistaken for closets, and I can imagine that these houses often include superfluous space such as "media rooms", bathrooms as big as the bedroom I grew up in, and 4 car garages. Truly I'd really love to see some stats on the media room phenomenon, a trend which I'm sure is at it's best (worst) in Big D.

    Is the French Room overrated?

I totally agree, Bill, with your comment about York Street. I've eaten at both the French Room and York Street, and York Street wins that comparison hands down. Makes me really question Mr. Addison's ability to perform his job.

Dallas' Katy Trail set for landscaping makeover

Not sure what an "urban outdoor enthusiast" is exactly, but I guess I am one because I use the Katy Trail. New trees are great, but when are they going to finish all of the other construction on the trail?

UnitedHealthcare helps make the health care system sick

Yes, I do think UHC thinks we're stupid! I work in the healthcare field, and unfortunately have the duty of interacting with United Healthcare on a regular basis. At a system-wide level, they restrict access to care by inappropriately limiting reimbursement to providers, restricting membership on their panel, routinely denying claims to certain types of providers, stringing providers and members along for months because of "lost" paperwork, and generally making every dealing with customer service a nightmare. It's exhausting to discuss medical terms with customer service reps in India who are doing nothing more than reading a script. Just today, I got hung up on or incorrectly transferred to the wrong department three times just because UHC had made a completely insane denial of a claim (a covered service which we regularly provide was inexplicably labeled as "experimental"). I am aware that some providers have stopped accepting UHC completely. I'm also aware that the company's stock price keeps climbing. Not paying for their member's healthcare is an easy road to profits. The good news is that I'm hearing that employers are wising up and moving their plans to other companies. I hope that UHC shapes up for the benefit of it's current members, but I'm not holding my breath!

Mental health services in the lone star state

That's an incredibly naive comment from a professional. Persons with mental illness frequently wind up in the justice system not because they commit violent crimes and are dangers to society, but because they commit minor offenses like trespassing. Then instead of receiving prompt, effective treatment (with the goal of gaining mental competence to stand trial) and sentencing, many get stuck in jail (or a state hospital) for much longer than the maximum sentence for the crime they committed because they either never meet the definition of "competent" or because jailers refuse to provide prisoners with appropriate treatment.

    UPDATED: Crem is closed

I agree that's it's certainly best to try to have the best info when the story is posted. But the online format is MUCH more conducive to actually getting a correction out, than the corrections printed in the DMN in section z, page 300. The listing for Firehouse is still alive and well in the restaurant section of the site, and I seriously doubt that anyone looking for it will happen across this article instead of the restaurant page itself.

UPDATED: Dallas arts patron, NorthPark developer and great man Ray Nasher dies at age 85

When I learned of Mr. Nasher's death, I was genuinely upset. I have to admit shedding a few tears, although my personal contact with him was limited to a couple of short conversations. He was amazingly warm and gracious, and clearly loved nothing more than to talk with someone interested in his art. He took his wealth not as something to be squandered or displayed, but as something he took as a responsibility and a duty. It meant he was able to share great works of art, not to mention great community buildings and speakers, with society as a whole. And he did it all with enormous humility and taste. I was surprised, but humbled, to see him leave the Nasher Sculpture Center one evening with his companion, Dr. Joann Stroud. He went not to a gold plated parking space with his name emblazoned across it, but to a spot on the street a block away. It's a small thing, but says volumes about who he was.

I'll miss you Mr. Nasher, but I'll think of you often when I see the legacy you've left. Dallas was lucky to have you, and we're still lucky to have your family continuing your good works.

Hard Rock Cafe confirms that it is closing

Makes me nostalgic for my junior high days when a fave spot was McKinney Avenue...anyone remember when the current site of the Uptown Gold's Gym was the Esprit store? Although the Hard Rock concept has had it's day, the space is really great and I hope someone opts to do something cool with it rather than tear it down to build a Pei Wei.

Perry signs order requiring anti-cancer vaccine for girls

Why do conservatives cheapen their legitimate gripes with this legislation (specifically cost and the questionable relationship between Perry and Merck) by bringing up the "moral/religious" debate? I don't want to listen to anything they have to say when they even obliquely intimate that somehow this vaccine is going to turn a bunch of 12-year-olds into sex fiends.

East Dallas builder to combat McMansions with postmodern style

Can't say I love post-modern architecture personally, but I'm all for anyone opting out of the depressing rock/brick Plano style home that is the bane of my existence. Now maybe some people will start to realize that we don't really NEED another Pei Wei...

Passengers stranded on American flights push for Passengers Bill of Rights

Really, a bill of rights isn't necessary if the airlines would just exercise a little common sense and courtesy. Unfortunately, I've been abused by our local incubus of the air (aka American Airlines) enough to be certain that only regulation and fines will ever change its corporate behavior.
