Video movie commentary and Avatar limited edition 3D glasses giveaway
Saw it on Sunday, and agree with all discussed here. A bit trite, but totally within suspension of disbelief, given all the epic eye candy and the arc.
+1
Still, holy crap, $12.50 for a movie. This can't be a habit. ;-)

As a developer, I recommend logic. Hmm, that might not work. Non-violence, then. What if couples just held hands? :-)

KERA acquires 91.7 FM for new public radio music station
Rick,
You were, but I rolled out the fix about the same time you posted this comment. We don't have any floating ads running now, so the point's not proven, but I think it should be better for you next time we have one.

Jason, You were adversely affected because you're a "staff member" to our ad server-- probably because you've contributed writing to us.
Most users should see this sort of ad at most once per day, but I'd written the ad service to abuse staff members a bit more so that a) we'd eat our own dog food and b) so that ad service administrators could view any ad for testing purposes.
Unfortunately, you and some other sorta-normal users got caught in the "staff member" net.
I'm adding a feature to allow individual staff members to be shown ads as normal users and putting you in that bucket. You should then only have dinosaurs eating your eyes once per day, or thereabouts. (The actual limit is subject to annoying technical vagaries, alas.)
Sorry for the collateral damage. :-/

I like Hal Higdon's advice, too.
Also, if you have an iPod or similar, I recommend Podrunner Intervals.

Game-changing development for indie bands
Cory Doctorow had a good suggestion for culture-propagation-- make a deal with media manufacturers to ship their USB sticks (or whatever's next) full of CC-licensed (or publicly-funded) files.
Sure, lots of people might wipe the data as soon as they bought it, but some would put it on shuffle (wink, David) before doing so.

Movie review: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
My wife wanted to see it. She loved the first one. I started checking my watch about 30 minutes into it. ++ungood. She didn't like it either.

Everyblock comes to your block
jefmelch, I actually did look into that. At the time, greatschools.net was pretty poor, and I looked into the TEA data along with attendance zones.
Unfortunately, I found many problems with the TEA data-- things like a reported low turnover rate in teachers but also a very low seniority. There were enough statistical fallacies that I couldn't have much faith in the reported numbers. It seems to me that people must not be using the TEA data for anything of consequence-- publishing it as required by law, but little auditing of obvious flaws in the reportage.
That along with the total lack of classroom-level statistics made it very difficult to make the TEA information useful to an individual parent or family.
Also, attendance seems to be determined in different ways for different ISDs-- in some cases, there is no geographic rule at all, but simple round-robin allocation of applicants to schools.
Finally, greatschools.net improved quite a bit before I could spend the time to go from proof-of-concept to production on the project, so all in all, we abandoned the project.
If EveryBlock can pull off useful DFW school information, my hat's off to them.

I hope, for the bombardier's sake, that the nose wheel didn't fail often. Yikes. I bet those apartment dwellers loved the near overflight. ;-) And the T-6 was close enough to spit on a couple times. Were you tempted?

Atheist billboards to go up in Dallas, Fort Worth
dallas_diner, I'm not religious, and I am a technologist, but they're just tools. Please don't suggest that science and its related technological progress is the highest form of success humanity has achieved.
If you advance that position, we'd first have to agree that technological advancement has been an unequivocal good-- and I love my gadgets and my lack of polio, but I'm thinking the Sistine Chapel is still some pretty hot stuff.

Dallas-based Brinker properties dominate list of "worst food in America" compiled by Men's Health
Over e-mail, I received a correction that Brinker/Chili's discontinued the Awesome Blossum some time ago. I haven't verified, but if true, it looks like Men's Health (and we, by extension) should research further. I haven't ordered one in forever, so perhaps I missed its removal. Must try harder. :-)
