Why I really really like Michael Moore

I pity anyone who believes the conspiracy theories of Alex Jones. But if you were just kidding, I'm sorry.

No one calls Michael Moore a journalist.

A journalist we all know and love "really really likes" Michael Moore, and unless he's just breaking wind as Mike suggests, I'm disillusioned by said journalist's apparent willingness to overlook lies.

Even if one agrees with Michael Moore's political views down to the last detail, how can you not condemn his well-documented deceitful practices?

For journalists, the standard should be truth above all else; hence my discouragement at discovering a Michael Moore fan (nearly) in charge of an otherwise excellent journalistic upstart.

My opinion of Pegasus News just took a nosedive. My opinion of Blue Shoe Mike is pity.

Fort Worth students not helping their own case

Sanders - I was your biggest fan before you went all socialistic on me.

We currently have a whole generation of McIdiots. The simplistic model is the one we currently have—the one where there is a single lowest common denominator to which we teach everyone. The one where we pretend that an elite group of a few educators can institute rules that are best for tens of thousands of students. One set of standards that we pretend is better than each and every one of the tens of thousands of different standards parents would uphold if given the chance.

Competition works everywhere it is tried. Why does anyone think it wouldn't work in education?

    Perpetuating the stereotype

I've read your posts on the joys of riding the train--you know, gettin' stuff done while you're moving. That's an argument that trains are good, but it's a long, long way from demonstrating that trains are worth billions of dollars, or even a half-cent sales tax increase.

I once lived in Atlanta, where we had MARTA--unquestionably good, but we'd have been much better off spending the money on roads.

    What's missing from local news?

    Mike,

That ghost town link is quite funny in a really, really sad way. Think of all the creative programming talent that was wasted.

That should be required viewing for every techno-wiz-kid who thinks he can get rich on his application without a good marketing plan.

If you're looking for a killer app, and I think you are, youth sports would have to be it.

You only need to find a way to get school-age kids to do the reporting for you. For free, of course. Maybe coordination with the schools? For extra course credit?

What fear and hate have done to the community of Farmers Branch

J, you're killing the joy here.

I never said nor intended "one throws intent of self-checking for bias out of the window."

Minnie is giving me the facts I want to hear as well as her opinion thereof. Admitting one's bias does not diminish her work, it enhances it. It also makes the news more interesting, and might, just might, entice more people to be a little more cognizant of the world around them.

I agree with Minnie and Alan on the FB illegal immigration vote, but I agree with bobdon on the quality of the journalism here.

But what really troubles me is that Minnie thinks this is her first opinion piece. Her March 19th article about Becky Miller and global warming was straight news? The one where she talked of being on the bandwagon? The one where she declared global warming as "one of our country's most pressing problems" and how she was "elated" that Mayor Becky Miller was doing something about it?

One of the best things about Pegasus News is its lack of pretense. Everybody's biased, so let's not pretend otherwise. I'm convinced that much of our cynicism these days stems from the likes of Dan Rather's "fake but accurate" dogged pursuit of neutrality.

Annual racial profiling analysis released by Texas Criminal Justice Coalition

I did a high-level review of our police department's racial traffic stop data. It's very much a judgment call as to what normative data to use for comparison.

I would say I want the Legislature to give local police departments better guidance as to how to report traffic stops, but I'm afraid they'd come up with something arbitrary that doesn't recognize the unique characteristics of each locality.

    The Onion hits home

    >This controversial issue is often reported with facts and information that are very difficult to relate to. --Brandon Armstrong, Onion News Network

    >There's so much information [on this controversial issue], there's no way to convey it to the people. -- Former Keller Councilman, just before voting to NOT put the controversial issue to a public vote

UPDATED: Former Keller police officer wins city settlement after military ruined his feet

    Official statement from City Attorney:

    >On March 20, 2007, the City Council unanimously voted to approve a settlement in this lawsuit in the amount of $55,000. This settlement was reached during a mediation between the parties on March 8, 2007. Mr. Richardson had sued the City last year seeking to receive his job and benefits back, along with $700,000 in back pay and compensation, along with attorneys fees. The settlement represents the City’s good faith desire to resolve a disputed claim and nothing regarding the settlement shall be construed as an admission of liability, all such liability being denied by the City. The City is certainly pleased to have this matter finally resolved and wish the best to Mr. Richardson and his family.

I can confirm that the Keller City Council approved said settlement at its meeting last night.

We designated our city attorney as media contact for this. Boyle & Lowry, Irving (they're in the book).

Carrollton Mayor Becky Miller signs Mayors Climate Protection Agreement

The late Carl Sagan, himself a proponent of anthropogenic global warming, once said (of extraterrestials and UFOs): "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof." I have read the "proof" of AGW and the only thing extraordinary about it is its weakness.

When they get a climate model to accurately predict global temperature five years from now, then maybe I'll buy in.

Another quote from Dr. Sagan, of Johannes Kepler, "When he found that his long-cherished beliefs did not agree with the most precise observations, he accepted the uncomfortable facts. He preferred the hard truth to his dearest illusions. That is the heart of science."

Wonder how many of today's AGW crowd will accept defeat when their dearest illusions are finally proved false?

UPDATED: Southlake dumps Allied Waste (wah wah)

    Sigh.

Keller's contract with Allied runs through August, 2010.

When called on the carpet in January 2007 to answer for Allied's failures to pick up Keller's garbage, General Manager Tim Powell reminded the council of the numerous ways in which Keller's government benefits at the expense of its residents' garbage fees. Most notable of these benefits is a $25,000 per year contribution to Keller's Public Arts program.

So the people of Keller should not look down at the trash blowing across the lawns; look up and behold the magnificent sculptures adorning Town Hall.

Note: I was not a Councilman when this kickback scheme was signed.

Why I don't plan on doing business with FOX again

I'm guessing that at least one of the fears of Mr. X is Pegasus' obvious non-objectivity. MSM types live and breathe on the fictitious notion of neutrality.

We'll all be better off when everyone from FOX 4 to the New York Times drops their pretentious assertions that they have no bias. I certainly hope Pegasus can thrive as we move toward honest (and more interesting) newshounding.
