They obviously didn't factor in things like weather.

2009 Fair Park Fourth
I've always enjoyed the Fair Park event the most from outside the Fair Park grounds. You just load up a cooler with beer and munchies, load up the car with friends, folding chairs and a few choice mix cds, then find a vacant parking spot with an unobstructed view of the fireworks.
I've always preferred a parking lot but it seems lots of folks find the shoulder of I-30 works too.

North Texas Tollway Authority cracking down on non-paying drivers
It's a trap alright.
Or at least it was when I entered the NDT up in Carrollton somewhere where I threw my money in the toll basket and drove it all the way downtown only to discover there was no toll basket. So about 6 months later I get a bill for five dollars and something in the mail for 3 trips on the tollway. They tack on an extra 50 cents to mail you the bill they wont let you pay on the road. So when that went neglected- which is easy to do with an unexpected bill for a paltry amount- I got a bill for over 100 dollars.
After a couple of calls and much begging and pleading they agreed to waive the additional hundred dollars just this one time.
I promised to never ever drive on one of their stupid toll roads again. Better to increase the CO2 in the atmosphere and help increase our nations dependence on foreign oil than take more direct route under those kind of circumstances.

Dallas-based Neiman Marcus to start selling lower-priced shtuff
I once had a girlfriend who asked me to go get her coat, a real nice one she wore a lot. When I spotted the Neiman Marcus label inside I ragged her about it a little.
She said, "Oh please, I got it at a yard sale."

UPDATED x2: Greenville Avenue crusader Avi Adelman cited for misdemeanor assault
Well the lack of available parking has been very effective at keeping me away from some of my favorite restaurants down there since I moved away. Looks like many of them have closed, or in the case of Ali Baba, moved.
Is Dodie's still open?
But then I suppose riff-raff like myself that no longer lives in the area has no business eating dinner in that part of town.
Just allow me to ask one small favor- please don't take your two block crusade up to McCommas. I can still usually park a block away and walk to the Granada or Aw Shucks.
So far I've managed to resist the impulse to pee in anyone's yard but if I had to walk three blocks, all bets are off.

momzila, I've wondered about that too. Also, don't any of these residents have driveways or apartment parking lots?

Wildscaping North Texas: thinking outside the boxwood
One problem I have living underneath a sprawling canopy of fully mature pecan and oak trees- with a row of mature cedars running along the property line- is all that shade makes growing anything edible almost impossible.
Except pecans. But the damn squirrels seem to prefer those to the over-abundant acorns.

Well put, chrisdanger.
Still, you gotta admit this thread has been pretty entertaining- if you have a slightly twisted viewpoint anyway.
Even my meager attempt to interject a bit of gravity resulted in more name calling, Godwin's law, deleted posts and cartoon bunnys.
And by saying that I don't mean to belittle any any actual victims in all of this.

So does anyone know anything about the guy who was laid out unconscious on Greenville Ave?
As per usual, Adelman seems to have sucked up all the oxygen.

I did catch your post earlier, Travis. Can't say I disagree.
I would have thought the first comment was more likely to be taken down, seeing how it's rather vague and was posted anonymously.

Pearls (of wisdom) before swine (flu)
Yeah the Mudbug thing got rained out mid-day and The Drams ended up playing indoors at Dan's Silverleaf but, as far as I know, no one got hurt (or came down with H1N1).
There's hard rain and there's torrential downpour that wreaks havoc and hail and flash floods and spurs tornado warnings.

Thanks, Travis.
One more thing- I hear from an informed source that there will be plenty of big tents set up since it looks like there's a hard rain gonna fall.

Well, the Denton Charity Mudbug Boil is still on for tomorrow; although they've done such a poor job of promoting it I can't link to an official website or even an event listing here at PN. Bands, crawfish and a gumbo cook-off.
Swine flu be damned!

Dallas orders homeowner to take down treehouse
Damn. When I read something like this thread it makes me feel very fortunate to have grown up when and where I did. Another place in a very different time.
Some of my best childhood memories are from my best friend's awesome treehouse his dad built him in the giant tree in their front yard.

Classic Slobberbone acoustic gig pops up online
I got this from a bit torrent site a month or so ago. It's notable in that it features Slobberbone's original guitarist, Mike Hill. Of course he's no Jess Barr but still.
Also the story behind how the guy taped it surreptitiously with his recorder concealed under his coat is pretty funny. He didn't realize they were a taper friendly band. Said if he'd known he would have just asked to plug into the soundboard.
If you're a fan of the Bone it's a must-have.

I hung back because of the high ticket price, high parking price, high beer and soda price- high price of anything associated with Nokia Theater.
So how was the show?

Concert review: Band of Heathens at Hank's Texas Grill (February 20)
I'll vouch that BOH is one of the best live bands playing around Texas these days. And each time I see them is better than the last.
DFW is on their list again March 7 at Jack's Backyard in Oak Cliff.
I'm anxiously awaiting that one.
