The "three bridges" construction project on Dallas' Northwest Highway: a TX DOT update
I'm really excited about this project, especially the hike & bike trail that will run where the current west bound lanes of Northwest Highway exist today.

Faded old Mesquite shopping center to get fancy makeover
Many of the rednecks have already abandoned Mesquite in favor of the more exclusive enclaves of Rockwall, Rowlett, and Forney. That said, there are still plenty left.

Kudos to the neighborhood association. Job well done.

CD World shuts down both branches on Greenville in Dallas and on Belt Line in Addison
I remember going to CD World as a kid from the 'burbs and feeling like I found another universe.
On the flip side, I've been enjoying the shows Granada has been able to book recently. The Black Keys were good, Malkmus was great, and I'm super pumped about the upcoming Digable Planets show.

Please email me if you use the New York Post as a news source. My cousin, the Nigerian banker, would like to talk to you.

Studio Movie Grill moves their corporate headquarters into new Dallas office space
Other possible Assets of the new location:
1) Employees will be allowed to have their souls back once they leave far north Dallas
2) close proximity to excellent shaved ice in Doc's Food Store at Meadow & 75
3) close proximity to two hospitals = guaranteed nurses in the lunch crowd
4) Henry Moss natural area is a great place to hide bodies
5) Nearby White Rock Creek offers snorkeling opportunities (seriously, I have seen people snorkeling in White Rock Creek near this location)
6) Near the best nursery in town, Northhaven Gardens
7) Nearby massage parlor makes decisions about where to go for lunch very easy.

SMU makes list of top 20 most homophobic schools
That's strange. SMU always struck me as a bastion of acceptance and free thinking.

Body count rising as bars close on Lower Greenville
I think these bar closings are the result of a shift in consumer preference. Greenville Ave has been on the decline as Uptown and Henderson Ave have become increasingly popular. In fact, back in the 'glass eyed bandit' days was the last time I remember going out with friends on Greenville Ave.

Dallas Housing Authority will stop accepting housing applications & start offering rental vouchers
I bet the city council was thinking the same thing (about market penetration) when they set up the 'Rename Industrial' poll.

The Adventure Club with Josh returns to 102.1 The Edge this Sunday
How fitting that the Adventure Club is returning on Independence Day weekend. Josh's show is an island of independent music and independent thinking in a musical landscape normally void of both.
I know what my fireworks will be celebrating this 4th!!

Dallas City Council approves purchase of land for Convention Center Hotel
It's funny you bring up Chicago. I have always thought the convention center hotel will become the next Cabrini-Green. There is absolutely no demand as a hotel so it's just a matter of time before "Hotel Leppart" becomes "Public Housing Project Leppart".

High-rise apartment building going into the spot in Uptown Dallas where Hard Rock Cafe used to be
An increase in supply is a good thing for the consumer.

Austin City Limits Festival releases 2008 lineup
More profit and less risk in competing cities is probably why Dallas doesn't see big music festivals. The last one I remember was Blockbuster's Rockfest at the Texas Motor Speedway (not actually in Dallas)
We like to focus on tasks that involve construction contracts here in Big D !!

Woodall Rodgers Park is more than 10% of the way to its fundraising goal
$67 million is a crap load of money to spend on a park. I guess it is expensive to build a cement deck in the air and plant grass/trees on it. Seems like a good use of resources, though. My understanding is that it will connect Downtown to Uptown in a way highway underpasses have never been able to.

If there is demand for a convention center hotel why hasn't the private sector reacted to supply that demand?

SXSW music lineup includes local acts
The best thing about SXSW is the spillover here in Dallas and Denton. I'm looking forward to seeing a few national acts that would otherwise skip our metroplex.
I'm also looking forward to catching some of these local bands when they come back to town high on the energy from SWSX.

UPDATED: DART to divert funds from Dallas to cover Irving and Rowlett rail projects
I remember when Mesquite was staunchly against DART because they did not want undesirable people to have easy access to Mesquite. Look at you now Mesquite, look at you now.

When is a closed dog park not really closed?
I always thought the reason the Mockingbird Dog Park is closed after a rain is to protect the turf. The grass tends to get more torn up when it is wet and muddy.
If the dog park is a health hazard after it rains then White Rock Lake itself must be a superfund site.

UPDATE: DART Rail down Monday morning between Mockingbird and Union Stations
This is the second time in about 2-3 months that service between Mockingbird and Downtown has been unavailable. At least the last time it was during the weekend...
