Stand alone - yeah, not so great. I did see one similar once that was positioned next to a lighted manger, and the effect was entirely different. Maybe people are planning to incorporate it...?

Dallas smoking ban decision delayed until December
Yes, as I said earlier, I think this should be up to the individual business owners.
I just wanted to say that I think most people that want a ban are doing so because, for them, a lot of smoke in the room can ruin the evening.
I am also really thinking restaurants/families, not bars, etc. If you don't expect smoke in a bar, you've obviously never been to a bar. Those folks should stick to wine bars.

Of course. That is one way of looking at it. On the other hand, if I don't care what other people choose to do, but just don't want it in my personal space, that's different.
I'm not talking about a health issue, I'm just saying that I can understand folks wanting to go out to eat and know that smoke will not be drifting onto them. What's that old saying - "your rights end when you reach my nose" or something like that. It wasn't even about smoking. But it seems applicable.

Drew - those are chosen health hazards. But what about those eating a lovely salad and drinking iced tea, and still sitting in a cloud of smoke? The lush at the table next to me is not affecting MY liver. Or the enjoyment of my meal. Smoke does.
However, I DO believe this choice should be made by business owners.

Yeah, I'm never going to understand this. When people start comparing alcohol to smoking they just lose me completely. I sure know when there's lots of smoke in the room, but I have no idea what's in your glass.

Grapevine minister preaches to have sex daily
I think the only people that will follow up on this are the people that don't really have problems with sex to begin with. Issues that have harmed your sex life with your spouse can't be worked out in a week of sex that was "prescribed" by your pastor.
I see where he's going with this, but I think it could lead to a lot of harsh words between couples that aren't communicating and have hurts. A simpler, less sensationalist approach (no pun intended) yet one that was still direct, might have been a better idea.

UPDATED: Gray-haired Southlake vigilante on a Hummer-keying rampage
The best comment here is Jason's about Hummers in Target parking lots. Expecting the military? Even my teenagers are disgusted by Hummers. My son proudly drives a well worn Prizm with a hubcap missing, because that's what he could afford! Although his grandad pointed out if he just replaced one side's caps with any style, no one would ever know they didn't match the other side.
Now THAT'S economical.

No, no, Rick, you didn't upset me. I've seen lots of your posts and appreciate an opinionated personality much more than a Mr. Milquetoast. I just said "flame" because of Jason's comment to "watch him flare". Just a joke.
I only stepped into the discussion because it seemed to be becoming inaccurate. I am ambivalent regarding the idea of teaching "The Bible" in school because there are a ridiculous number of unknowns in that equation. I can't believe it would be done "correctly" - and by that I mean according to ANYONE'S definition. Really, you know that NO ONE would be happy with how it was done.
I'm sorry that your experiences with "religion" made you feel that you lost power over your life - and that you still feel that. The trouble is, there's just no way to avoid being exposed to religion, regardless of its nature. I don't think public school is likely to be the correct forum, but I do think our country could definitely benefit from young people that understand different religions and different points of view. That might help them to sidestep the experience you had and think more independently.
No one's invited to my house. It's waaaaay too dirty, courtesy of my kids.

Bar of Soap, venerable rock bar-laundromat in Dallas' Exposition Park district, closes
I can't believe I never even knew this existed. Years ago my sister and her boss would always cite their fallback plan when layoffs approached - they were going to open a brew pub/laundromat called "Suds". It was a long running joke. Had they only thought a little farther out of the box! And to think they would have had competition!
I feel terrible that I found out about it now that it's too late to see what could have been. Too bad. Wish them well - that's a long time to keep something like that up and running.

Movie review: The Women
I haven't seen this, and I probably won't get around to it, but in high school my friend and I stumbled across the Cukor film one Saturday afternoon and had a hoot with it! We spent the rest of the afternoon recasting it with modern day actresses (who now would be old and retired, but you get my drift). It's too bad English didn't keep it super campy, which is how we viewed it.
Maybe it's harder to make a movie like this NOW, in the age of SITC - maybe an all woman cast isn't the crazy gimmick it was in 1939. And in 39, of course, it was mostly just interior shots, simple sets - probably more like the play, so the absence of men is kind of like a background joke... not really a focus.
I always wondered if it could be remade. I didn't really think so. It would be like trying to remake Imitation of Life now. Too much has happened to see race through that lens anymore. And the huge victory of a woman managing to "keep her man" is very 1939 also.
And there's just no way Eva Mendes is as great of a bitch in it as Joan Crawford!!

Yes, thanks for the flame, Rick. It reminds me of hellfire and brimstone...
C'mon, I never said I thought we should send 18 year olds to war! I was only pointing out that the discussion had strayed into the area of "children", which is a different thing entirely.
If you really think that teenagers are going to be lured into "progressive mind-control", you aren't paying attention to the story at hand. None of them are attending the classes! Doesn't that speak for itself as to their ability to make individual choices?
If you think that these teens are still too impressionable to be trusted to decide what classes to take, then should we assume you wouldn't hold them accountable for crimes they might commit or ever see a teen as fit to be tried as an adult?
I wasn't trying to provoke anyone. I just thought the comments had begun to veer away from accuracy. And there can't be any intelligent discussion unless we are all talking about the same thing! If you feel there is no difference between offering bible classes to teens and children, then your remarks are consistent with your opinion, and I apologize for misunderstanding. I just thought we were all starting to picture little 8 year old Johnny, innocently strolling into bible class and soaking it all in. Metro area high schoolers don't resemble that in any way.
Anyone with the ability to be so very controlling and convincing with teens is invited to my house. Please demonstrate that living in filth, procrastinating everything, never sleeping, etc. might not be the optimum lifestyle... but good luck. I've mentioned it... expect a sigh and an eye-roll.

OK, tad off topic, but I'm still whining about the CD I paid $20 for at Bend for the performance I attended that night. Never got it. And what a bummer, my voice is on there asking the performer a question!
Closest I'm getting to being on a CD - forget the $20! I wanted my 15 seconds of fame!

AnnMarie - sorry, I don't understand what you mean by the phrase "all the same under the cover." All religions? All bible teaching? Sad to say, I am easily confused.
Yeah, and jtmbls - I'd certainly like to know where Scott Doyle and Pavel are tonight! They are definitely not doing their fair share in the hi-jacking/wise-cracking department. Guys???

Just to clarify - these are high school students, not first graders. I have two teenagers, and believe me, they most definitely make up their own minds about things. I don't want to get into the debate about whether or not this should be taught in schools - what should and shouldn't be included, who is qualified to teach this, etc.... I just want to point out that most posts here are saying things like "just let them be children" or similar statements. At 18 they can vote and go shoot Iraqis. These young adults are old enough to choose whether or not they wish to take such a class.
These students are fully capable of grasping religious concepts. Should they have the opportunity to take this class? Maybe so. Would it be any good? Who knows. But nothing is being shoved down their throats - no one has even chosen to take the classes. This is almost a non-story.

We old people have been anticipating it! Saw Cary Pierce a few months ago at House of Blues. He was great, brought the whole family, had his little son introduce him. He's extremely energetic and engaging. I have a couple of Jackopierce CDs but have never seen them perform together.
C'mon now, don't mock. We're the crowd not going to see the AC/DC and Van Halen tribute bands this weekend.

Christians shying away from charitable giving because of bad economy
Re: Pavel's question-
I only meant to point out that even if our incomes have dropped, we still have many ways to be charitable and kind. Bringing meals, donating clothing, babysitting children. Showing love, giving back what we have been given. It's the love that cannot be measured.
I in no way meant to imply that you can just "wish them well" and go on your merry way. I clearly said you should give from the heart, maybe I was unclear, I definitely meant give MONEY. My giving has not changed, but I can understand circumstances where it would become harder for some people and they should not be made to feel guilty about it, in my opinion.

Lakewood man plows into car driven by would-be attackers
Wow. Wonder if he was trapped in... I would have just driven away! Like Kay said - what if you ended up with an non-working vehicle and 5 mad guys? Yikes.
He must not have had other options - says he was "backed into a corner". And calls himself a coward - so he's not feeling all Rambo afterwards. It's probably good/lucky that he followed his instincts.
And FIVE guys? What happened to the old fashioned "one with a gun" method? Begs for a joke... "How many bat wielders does it take to carjack you?" As many as will fit in a four door Chevy, apparently.

No,don't be jerky... even if Christians don't have as much disposable income as they have previously, we are blessed in many ways that can't be measured, and that's worth sharing with everyone.
It doesn't matter what people say. To remark "wouldn't Jesus be proud" shows how little we understand - Jesus is in the business of loving, not pride. People are all about pride - comparing, competing. Just give what you can from the heart and that will be enough. Jesus could feed 5000 with five loaves and two fishes. God can take what is given and accomplish the unimaginable.
Oh, I know that sounded really sappy, sorry. I just don't know a better way to express it.

Well, I'm with dadavark - is there a control group here? And what is meant by less... less overall or a lesser percentage? That's significant.
However, having said that, giving is personal and of the heart, and it's sad to me that someone's watchdogging it.

I am sorry for your loss. I am sure you are hurting.
But another family could be hurting in the same way if his shot was more accurate.
I'm sure he was loved by everyone in his family, but at some point all of us are responsible for our own actions, regardless of who influences us. And I do think 19 is old enough for that responsibility. That's not BS, and I'm sure you know that. I'm sorry things turned out as they did.
