Based on your feelings, the fact you keep referencing the way she was born as a lifestyle, and how you were quick to point how how disapproving you were, I suppose we should be looking at her family environment as to the possible reasons for why this happened. Maybe instead of sitting on your judgmental throne, you should have supported her decision to be who she was, so long as she was happy with her life. It would not have hurt any of you to do that, but your rigid, ideological dogma was more important and I'm sure Rachel knew that. I feel so sorry for her, for what she must have had to go through dealing with a family full of people like you.
