North Texas musicians and fans have a new best friend: KXT's Gini Mascorro

Kane, that's an oft-repeated falsehood. In reality, nearly all of KXT's operating budget will be funded by listener and underwriter support (i.e. the "brought to you by" announcements you hear at the top of the hour). Public radio in the U.S. is not the BBC - only a very small portion of operating funds come from Uncle Sam, and most of those come indirectly via grants.

KERA launches Living with the Trinity website, radio series

Definitely worth a visit, particularly for the videos.

My Denton Music spotlight: Paul Slavens

Paul's also got a great podcast at KERA's Art and Seek site (artandseek.org) where he interviews local (or semi-local) musicians about their latest releases - including Doug Burr, Salim Nourallah and Mara Lee Miller (looks like Rhett Miller was just posted):

UPDATED: McCarty's Restaurant & Tavern on US 75 in Richardson sure looks to be closed -- but looks can be deceiving

Went by McCarty's tonight (Dec. 6) and it appears to be closed again, and less likely to reopen. From the few lights on inside, I could see that wall decorations (including several flat-panel TVs) were gone, as well as some tables/furnishings.

We tried it twice, and were disappointed both times - weak food and beer selection, and indifferent service at best. You'd think an Irish pub would at least have Guinness on tap, but they had the typical lame collection of mass-produced domestics (the server said "uh, I think we have Guinness cans"). It's a shame - we live in the neighborhood and would love to have seen it succeed. Perhaps the owners of the flourishing Fillmore in Plano could extend their brand and reopen McCarty's under a different name (and VERY different management style).
