The Dallas Morning News acquires Pegasus News
Although I haven't been involved with PegNews since I left last year, I'm thrilled to see this happen. I'm betting my old team and my pals at the DMN will make magic together. I've always wanted the platform we built and that the current team built upon to reach the biggest audience possible -- the DMN is a home where that can happen.
Congrats to all!

149 small breed dogs rescued from puppy mill in Denton County
The puppy mill people get very active. See these early posts and responses on the early proto-PegasusNews blog, circa 2005: http://orrenmedia.com/?s=spca

Photo preview: AmStar Cinemas 14 opens in Dallas on Friday
Little-known trivia: This chain is owned by the family of Glenn Solomon (his parents, I suppose), who is the fellow who brought D Magazine back from the dead, later selling it to current management.

Prison Entrepreneurship Program changes lives of felons -- and executive volunteers
For those who enjoyed/followed this story, you might want to know that I'm now doing a book on PEP and working with UNT's Mayborn School of Journalism to produce a documentary.
There's more info and an opportunity to support the project (basically by pre-buying the product) here: http://kck.st/o9udzz

UPDATEDx4: Trader Joe's coming to Dallas -- and Fort Worth
We just got back from a vacation in LA and there was a Trader Joe's down the street from our hotel. We were able to get four day's worth of food and hooch for about $150. The food was all great quality, particularly cheeses and chocolates. The two-buck Chuck was better than you might expect.
It comes off as a hybrid of World Market and Whole Foods, but without all the extra stuff you don't often need.
The whole time we were there, we kept saying how we wished they'd come to Dallas. Hopefully they'll put one in the under-served Far East Dallas area.

Somebody call Lee Harveys, or maybe Tradewinds.

I had the opportunity to go back to Cleveland last Friday, for the kickoff of the next class (#15). I got to see most of the guys mentioned in the story, and it was great to catch up with them and get their reactions. Lots of things I hadn't thought of, like Jonathan having not been privvy to some of the good things his relatives had to say until he read the story.
Working with a new class, it was even easier to see the transformative nature of the program. Where the graduates were polished, the 110 new students have a ways to go. It was almost impossible not to place odds on who would make it and who wouldn't.
I got to sit down with a half-dozen of the new students and help them think through their business plans. It was cool to get the chance to do something that (I hope) really helps, as opposed to primarily basking in the glow as I got to do when writing this story.

Good 2 Go Taco new East Dallas location is ready to roll
They were vacillating on opening this morning, initially saying, "come by but don't tell anyone," but by early morning decided to damn the torpedoes.
Would love to meet there, but that's a little early for me, even pre-sabbatical hours. Maybe on some special occasion...

They're up and running. The hollandaise on the Paris, TX is as remembered and the coffee is top-notch.

Chic From Barcelona in North Dallas closing on Wednesday
I can't say I'm surprised. It used to be a favorite go-to for a reasonably priced lunch near the office, but the last couple times I went it was empty, slow and generally mediocre.

FWIW Scott, this is a new account starting at zero, with my staff account frozen in time. So you'll likely catch up without even trying.
And Jason, whatever my commercial endeavors might be, you can always know far too much about me at http://mikeorren.com

Looks like a cool site. I started an account so I can post and comment. Maybe someday I can make the commenter leaderboard (again): http://www.pegasusnews.com/users/?o=c
ScoDo, your way is paved :-)

Freddy’s Frozen Custard
I asked what a Steakburger is and the friendly staff stated "it is a very high grade of lean beef that is hand-crafted" thin on the edges and thicker in the middle. This makes for carmelization on the edges and a juicy center. The Hawaiian is a must eat on the custard menu. I will definitely be bringing my friends!
