Mosquitoes develop a resistance to chemical sprays and nuisance spraying only makes for the need to require more applications of chemical spraying. It's much like a human developing resistance to antibiotics.
The mosquito control programs have a very close relationship. If you attend their conferences you can't help but experience the close connection.
Historically, they talk about education but do little. Their preventative measures could be a lot better. There is little accountability. They play on the the taxpayer's fear.
Check out their trade publications and note they are filled with full page ads from chemical companies and chemical applicators.
They are easily threatened by environmentalists (who also dislike mosquitoes) but understand their place in the ecosystem.
In relationship to the West Nile cases how does it compare to other threats, i.e. Lyme disease (from ticks) or even traffic fatalities.
A lot of it is just good theater that the taxpayer ends up paying for.
