CityWalk @ Akard in Dallas -- An ongoing report (part 3)
Wow. What a great project. Bless you guys for the work you're doing. Your tenants are really going to be a lucky group! And finding such a great way to maximize the use of an older building, helping Downtown and our most unfortunate neighbors while remaining environmentally conscious -- you're doing the kind of work we should all strive for. Thank you.

Parents of Rowlett High School students don't like Rent
See, I think when Obama gets everybody out of Guantanamo, we should through these idiots in there instead. And subject them to The Birdcage and Darwin documentaries 24/7.

Fort Worth's T bus service to and from Arlington begins Tuesday
Wouldn't it make more sense to have the busses drop them off somewhere mid-way along the TRE? Shorter bus trips, allows them to be more frequent, and just as convenient for people going to DTD as to DTFW...

Quality of life in Dallas tied to dearth of affordable housing

Citywalk at Akard is one early answer to this problem. It's a great project, with a lot of potential. I hope they receive the support they need so that they can continue to broaden the diversity of the downtown community.

Rover Dramawerks previews and opens An Infinite Ache this week
One of my favorite plays. Glad to see a local production of it. Wish I were in town to catch it, but it's a remarkably well-written and interesting piece. Can't speak to Rover's production, but I highly recommend the play itself.

Texas program for cleaner vehicles full of faults
Sorry, one more amendment. I now see that they are going to be gracious enough to give people choosing to by a hybrid an additional $500 dollars. That's $5,500 less than the difference between a hybrid car and an equivalent "low-emissions" traditional engine car. It's barely even a pittance, and shows how little regard the Texas legislature actually has for cleaning up our air.
Thanks guys.

Sorry, in my own foolishness I put "by" where "buy" should be. It's still early in France, and I haven't had my first cup of coffee yet.

Vouchers for new, lower polluting cars are great. Vouchers for people who have low household incomes and hold jobs are great. However, vouchers that insure neither of those but--as you've said--help a bunch of people who can't even spell carbon dioxide by newer, shinier, hardly more eco-friendly cars is a waste of money.
If Texas politicians had even a small dose of real concern for the environment, or any real desire to meet these limits imposed upon us, they would still be giving out these vouchers -- but only for people getting very high fuel efficiency vehicles, in an effort to help offset the higher initial cost of a good low-emissions engine.
Some communist principles can be used to actually help people--which, frankly, is still more important than helping business entities--and the society as a whole. Others, like this, reek of the idiocy that gives "active government" a bad name.
It’s almost as foolish as giving people tax rebates for buying SUVs.

Kansas City group lobbying for daily train service to Dallas
Hope this happens. Seems idiotic to me that the Heartland Flyer stops in Fort Worth without continuing on to Dallas.
The more rail we can get connected to, the better.

It's perfectly fine for them to prosper, as long as they're not manipulating people to get the money. But by denying to divulge this information, it sure smells like they have been taking a bit more out of the offering plate than a good preacher should. If you care about people maintaining a respect for Christianity, you should be enraged that these men think they are above the law.

National Board of Review declares No Country... best film of 2007
Good for Burton! Seems like critics and awards rarely give him the accolades that we mere moviegoers know he deserves.
I can't wait for Todd. Greatest musical of the 20th century, by one of America's greatest directors.

Irving upset over DART's possible orange line delays
This is a huge problem. We can't afford to lose, or have a major delay, on the Orange line or the second downtown line. Too bad that we can't afford to get them on time, either.
Bigwigs, anybody feeling philanthropic? Please?

UPDATED AGAIN: Redacted will not open in Dallas, says distributor rep
Let's hear it for artistic integrity! So we've got two mainstream "art house" theaters, when can we get a movie theater that's actually interested in presenting artistic, risky, and/or challenging works instead of new "independent" films from Dreamworks, Warner, and Sony?

Dallas placing new focus on bicycles as commuting alternative
I usually ride without a helmet, and have yet to be harrassed.
I do agree, though, that while the bike trails are great we really need an increase in bike lanes along the roads. Seems to me those can be defined much more quickly than building entire biking/jogging paths, and they're going to make adding bikes into the normal transit mix even easier.
That said, I do think there is the potential for the trail system to become in essence the "highway" for bicyclers in DFW. But as far as the most practical purpose of bikes in commuting--taking your bike to the nearest mass transit station--bike lanes are infinitely more practical and important.

Dallas placing new focus on bicycles as commuting alternative
It's certainly going to take a lot of work to get the bicycle facilities to where they need to be, but I'm glad for each step along the way.
I'm living in Paris through the end of the year, and would love to see Dallas--some ways down the line; probably wouldn't make sense for at least another decade--employ some variation on the theme of the Velib system now running here. Especially with these past couple of Metro strikes, the Velibs have really helped to curb the chaos.
Any thoughts on whether such a system would be practical in Dallas anytime in the next quarter century?

Dallas Symphony extending invitation to Trekkies it will surely regret
I've never been to a Star Trek convention, but I would be at this event for sure if I was free either night. All of the Star Trek franchises, except maybe for Enterprise, have some incredible music (the themes from Deep Space Nine and Voyager where much better than either show ever turned out to be, IMO). I think it's nice to see the DSO continuing to expand their potential audience base, and celebrating a truly diverse base of orchestral music.

UPDATED: Exhibit Review - Van Gogh's Sheaves of Wheat
I made the trek down to the DMA today, in hopes of seeing the Van Gogh exhibit. The wait, though, was over two hours long when I got there at around 2:30pm -- I heard someone on staff say that there were over 5,000 people waiting in line to get in to the Van Gogh exhibit alone. The rest of the museum was more lively than I think I've ever seen it, too. It's a shame the collection at the DMA isn't of the caliber to support such a crowd on a consistant basis.
