National Trust for Historic Preservation names Dallas Grand Hotel one of America's most endangered places
I was downtown last night and saw lights on and paper on the windows of the bottom floor of the Grand. There are permits displayed and a big sign saying not hiring. Anyone know what the activity going on is? Is this hotel renovation or is this something related to other projects around it?
This article from 2008 says the biggest thing holding back renovation was parking. We now have the underground parking in the area. Will that make the change?

Inside Edition goes after Cheaters
I can tell you for absolute and certain that when the show started there were times when actors were used to keep the show interesting. An aquaintance of mine, formerly in aquatic military service made extra cash doing episodes. That being said I worked with not one but two cheaters in the last few years, one of whom his wife accused him of having a social disease when he was caught with someone who wasnt his wife. It made his working life a bit of a spectacle. Lets face it, the show is cheesy at best but when the only other choice is an infomercial at 3am, its worth watching just to see if you can name the exact location of the bust (Apartments, bars, restaurants)

Hosam "Sam" Smadi pleads "not guilty" in Fountain Place bombing attempt
All your missing is Chris Hanson (Can you have a seat over there please?). The question is, would this guy have done it if the FBI hadnt set him up? Do you really want to find out? How would you feel about a smoking crater in downtown Dallas? Bottom line if he has the selective morals that would allow him to push the (Fake)plunger - I really dont want him on the street. What you do with him is up to someone else (Above my pay grade?(Thanks Prez!)

North Texas Tollway Authority hikes are official as of September 1
"Raising rates is always a difficult decision to make, especially during an economic downturn. However, it is necessary to raise rates to maintain a financially viable system of roadways so that we can continue to deliver important mobility projects to the North Texas region," said NTTA Executive Director Allen Clemson.
Your totally and absolutely full of S@@t Mr. Clemson and I wish there was a nice way to make the NTTA realize that they need us, not that we need them. However asking the self absorbed people of North Texas to not use the Tollway for a day would likely be about as popular as asking them not to speed. Thats just not going to happen. So I will continue to wage my one man war and drive all those slow roads...

UPDATED: Theater at Highland Park Village in Dallas to be taken over by Landmark
The last movie I saw there was American Gangester and I was charmed by the theater. I think it would be great to have one more independant type theater around town and this is the perfect location!

New Texas law says kids up to age 8 must ride in car seats
I'm sure this is a wonderful idea. However before we put this into effect can we start prosecuting or at the very least ticketing and fining the mothers of rugrats currently running free through the cars.
If you truly want to make some cash - forget the DUI checkstops and the seat belt health checks, just sit at any red light and watch the carloads of toddlers scurrying from window to window in cars through out the metroplex.
For the sake of the next generation, at the very least do what my mother did and scream till that childs little bottom is cemented into the seat and belted in (I believe it was - "This car isnt moving until your seat belt is on and you better not move until we arrive!")

Governor Rick Perry still doesn't think Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison will run against him
Is there no one in Texas who really might have an interest in running the greatest state in the Union?? Are we like Lott in search of just one honest & just man because I fear that neither of the candidates currently running will truly keep the best interests of the Texas Citizen in mind. Rick Perry has proven time and time again he won't. And since Kay is really basically an enigma - I'm not sure that she will hold any of our wishes in high esteem (She didn't when she represented us in Washington.)

Sweet Tomatoes wins "best buffet" just as it's set to arrive in Dallas
The quote “Dining is and always was a great artistic opportunity – Frank Lloyd Wright” adorns the main dining wall of the Addison location of Sweet Tomatoes. This always has struck me as a very strange statement in this restaurant. While yes indeed there is dining, the gods honest truth is there is nothing here artistic, nor is there a architectural aspect that you might expect from a place that would hold Frank Lloyd Wright in their esteem. The building as well as the decor is very Ikea-esque. Functional and light.
Sweet Tomatoes is a salad bar. Advertising the freshest of fruits and vegetables (...24hours after being harvested from the ground.) and all salads, soups, chili's, and bread products made from scratch daily.
Like other Salad Bar chains (Souper & Salad), the restaurant attempts to show its flair not in the number of vegetable options or numbers of dressings but instead in the specialty items like the eight daily soup choices, and their kitchen favorites section.
Not unlike competitor Golden Corral, you find breakfast choices before noon. (Get in before 11 on Sundays to beat the after church crowd)
The breakfast fare is sparse with a serving of scrambled eggs and the oatmeal as well as cold cereals in the main salad lines but they also offer Focaccia's (Breakfast Pizzas) and an egg or zucchini Fritatta (An egg souffle) None of the choices is truly standout except maybe a breakfast pasta dish that they do come up with thats rather tasty.
Unlike local Dallas favorites Cafe Brazil, the major low point of the breakfast experience is the coffee. Coffee is served in one of three pump thermos bottles, one is decaf and neither of the other two is generally full or well watched (You almost have to request someone to make another thermos). The flavors are not adventurous, the scents are not aromatic and tempting as coffee might be to draw the crowd, and worst of all, their cups are very small. I know, not everyone is a coffee drinker, but lets face it, early Sunday morning, more than not your crowd will be focusing on a pick me up after Pastor Pete's long and thoughtful sermon.
My one major plus for this restaurant is the same thing I think about attending a Texas Rangers game. It's a great place to people watch! Within feet of me right now is an Octogenarian couple, very sweet and complimentary with each other. They have been slowly eating and chatting for the last hour (without a trace of the arguing that I normally find with my own parents), two old southern ladies, one with a big floppy gardening hat who have been extolling the virtues of what they find tasty with mouths full and happily vocal, an Asian American family with three children below the age of 5 who have eaten without a word (Not something you normally find with children) and a table of church going parents and grandparents (They stopped and said grace) with their prime focus on their newest grandchild, a month or two old and protectively watched over a first time mother and ex-frat boy husband. (He didn't say grace). You also have the half dressed, the badly dressed, the badly hung over, and those who not unlike me, crept directly from slumber, unable to find a brush (I did shave).
All said, Sweet Tomatoes is not a standout among the brunch fare of Dallas, but it is a great place to sit and watch a true subsection of life pass by.

GOOD FOR THEM!! My best friends daughter has things on her Myspace page that would shock a prostitute. What would happen if someone stepped up and taught these kids to have some self respect. (yes a parent should be doing it but obviously isnt). Maybe the next generation wouldnt be drinking, cursing, sexing, piercing, and tattooing themselves before they reach 18.
(Boy am I going to get some nasty mail but in the end, I just want our kids to grow up with some self respect and I dont see it. (No I dont have my own kids))

I've decided against the stew but the steak sounds great. Anyone free for dinner?
Whale Steak
4 portions
4 slices of whalemeat @ 150 - 180 g
Salt and pepper, preferably freshly ground 4 onion rings
2 dessert spoonfulls of finely diced green or red peppers
1 dessert spoonful of finely diced parsley
1 dessert spoonful of finely diced gherkins
Carve the meat into slices of about 1.5 to 2 cm thick, beat them with your hands and press them into shape. Preheat the frying pan and melt some butter in it. Brown the butter before adding the meat. Fry the steaks on both sides. Whale meat should be fried for about 4-5 minutes on each side. The steaks taste best when they are medium rare, but they should be warmed right through and not eaten raw. Serve the steaks on a plate, place an onion ring on each of them and fill it with peppers, parsley and gherkins. Potato scollops taste good together with the steaks. Serve with a bowl of good, crisp lettuce and salad.

I'm soooo sorry. I see the error of my ways. I'm shedding tears for all our furry friends. Forgive me my evil not politically correct thoughts.
(When I'm feeling better I think I might go have a nice a big bowl of Norweign Whale Stew with a side of Elephant Jerky while I'm watching some boob tube this evening.)

DC - if you feel so positive about us slack jawed yokels, feel free to go live out in the woods among the animals. I'm sure you will be more happy there.
Your video is standard Peta crap. There are idiots in every group and you have some great shots of two of them. Im happy to have both of them trampled to death by an elephant and I wouldnt shed a tear.
Pedal your bleeding heart liberal crap some place else. I love animals just like anyone else - right on my plate next to the rice!
(BTW I love the shot of the elephant doing a trick and how demeaning that is, however you see a human doing idiotic things in the same shot. Funny!)

Russ you would rather they left him/her/it out there for the Japanese or the Aleutians to hunt, kill, and eat?? Despite what PETA will tell you these animals are generally treated well and get fed far better than they would in the wild.
I for one hasve great memories of the elephants at the circus and at this point in my life still try to make it out for the elephant walks from the trains to the big tops.

Lewisville cheerleaders accused of using drugs at weekend retreat
Hey Chris - I dont believe you have ever been to a rave. No I wasnt envisioning porn - however: The most common beneficial effects reported by users include:[58]
A general and subjective alteration in consciousness A strong sense of inner peace and self-acceptance Diminished aggression, hostility, and jealousy Diminished fear, anxiety, and insecurity Extreme mood lift with accompanying euphoria Feelings of empathy, compassion, and forgiveness towards others Feelings of intimacy and even love for others Feelings of insightfulness, introspection, and mental clarity Improved self-confidence without the incidence of arrogance The ability to discuss normally anxiety-provoking topics with marked ease An intensification of perception, particularly tactile sensation or touch, as well as hearing and vision Substantial enhancement of the appreciation for or quality of music Mild psychedelia, consisting of mental imagery and auditory and visual distortions As well as:
Stimulation, arousal, and hyperactivity (e.g., many users get an "uncontrollable urge to dance" while under the influence) Increased energy and endurance Increased alertness, awareness, and wakefulness Increased desire, drive, and motivation Hypersexuality and aphrodisiac effects (along with paradoxical sexual dysfunction (see below)) Analgesia or decreased pain sensitivity
And of course the one side effect that isnt mentioned here but happens more times than it should is death. This is a narcotic that is produced without benefit of oversight in a pharmacutical facility and there are plenty of cases of deaths that have occurred but directly and indirectly from this drug.

Fully agree with Travis and Scott. 16 years old is 21 now. These kids think they know everything and they have full control of the world. They are only upset because they got caught, mom found out, and now they are going to lose their college ride as a cheerleader. My question is - where they by themselves? E is a drug that you mix with sex. This is not pot. This is not something you kick back with Dark Side of the moon and a bag or doritos. This is a drug when you get naked, hit the mood lights, add the pacifiers (Or other oral prop because you must keep your jaw moving during the drug), and you do things you dont admit to mommy and daddy in the daylight.

And of course stupidity on the part of the people paying. If you have that much spare cash, how about you sponsor a few third world kids or donate to KERA so those people quit taking over programming for months on end.
