Dallas movers-and-shakers endorse Woodall Rodgers Park

And the show must go on.
It's nice that Dallas has hired these wonderful designers, planners, lawyers, real estate gurus, and builders with their Utopian 'visions'. It's oh-so great to watch them working at their oh-so creative jobs. However, just because you have the money to do something, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.
Yeah, it's fun. Everybody gets excited and caught up in the fan-fare; they make a lot of great speeches, there's plenty of photo-ops of breaking ground and ribbon-cutting. It makes everyone from the city council members and developers, to the mayor's office feel like their doing what they are supposed to do- spend oodles of taxpayer dollars building stuff.

You don't have to build anything to bring uptown folks to downtown. The structures downtown needs are already here- the empty buildings standing all over the downtown area. It may be more financially sensible for property owners to sit on these buildings and wait for the next Dallas developer to snatch them up for billions, than it is to actually think of leasing them to small businesses.
Sizable tax credits, property-owner incentives, and small business incentives could be used to lure businesses to set up shop in these buildings. But I guess that's not dramatic enough. We'd rather spend billions to build parks.

Businesses bring people to downtown- not parks. This will never be New York City- stop trying to create a Central Park in Dallas!

And boy, whoever is in charge of bringing businesses to downtown Main Street is doing great. I wish the rest of downtown would get with the program. Spread out the lure to businesses to ALL parts of downtown. 'Revitalize' ALL of downtown- not just lower Main Street.

"Gay Jesus" play canceled because jobs were threatened, says Tarleton State student

    Typical!
We want all our high-ed schools to be teaching our young with the exact same "standards of decency and moral beliefs" that the vast majority of Texans cling to. As we all know, society operates much smoother when everyone thinks exactly the same.

New art space in downtown Dallas opens above Pearl at Commerce

Well done Stephanie. And thank you Travis Bush. Pearl has been exhibiting local art and hosting art shows since our beginning. Now we're looking forward to Upstairs @ Pearl opening up to display even more of Dallas' artistic community.

Dallas restaurants grapple with foodie photo-taking brigade

I say this is a matter of mingling with other humans. At the expense of privacy, personal space, and the collective intellect, it has firmly become a jpg. world. Get over it or stay home.
Or...try throwing food at them. Let them take a shot of that and tweet with it.

Grammy-award winner Lyle Mays continues the North Texas jazz legacy

I am a huge fan of Lyle Mays. He is one of the finest pianist/keyboardists I've heard. I know him best from his work with Pat Metheny. I'd love to listen to this guy talk about music.

International Jazz Festival coming to Dallas

This is really great! Yes, please, somebody with some sense and access to some bucks find a way to 1) highlight the tremendous jazz talent here in North Texas, and 2) showcase in general some real JAZZ!!!

J&J Blues Bar in Fort Worth will close January 30

Well, I know very little of Ft Worth, but Dallas has a very rich Blues history, that if cultivated, and marketed properly, could be a source of Blues resurgence and get some young people interested in the music that is the shoulders on which today's artists stand. Dallas could actually be a Music Destination for Blues fans from all over the world, but sadly, it's not going to happen. The Dallas city council is more interested in being lobbied by parking lot crooks, and building useless parks in the middle of downtown. Such a missed opportunity by the 'stewards' of this city.

How to combat parking lot fraud

Maybe it's like Deep Ellum in that someone with enough money and political clout is wanting to do something dramatic with this eastern-downtown-neighborhood too. Maybe they're just sitting back waiting for all the small businesses to give up and go away. The real estate has to be getting cheaper down here too.

Maybe I just expect too much. When I hear folks say downtown is coming back- they've been shuffling up and down a three and four block area of Elm and Main where all the big high-rise buildings are that can afford to attract restaurants and clubs to occupy their bottom floors. Little two-story places like ours are not even considered in downtown proper- not by the city council anyway.

Downtown Dallas is not as dead as you think

In the parking lot next to our building, there's an attendant that works the lot on weekends. All the while there's a huge sign at the front of the lot that says, "Do Not Pay Attendant". WTF? On all the parking lot signs I've seen, there's the day rate in big print- usually $1.75 (All day). Then in small print- $5.00 at night and on weekends.
It's intended to be confusing. Why? Because commercial parking lots making far more money from the kick-backs of booting and towing cars than they do simply renting parking spaces.
How can a person come downtown and enjoy themselves when the first thing they have to do is deal with people who are obviously trying to cheat them out of money?

    Rick Yost's comment on:

Downtown Dallas is not as dead as you think

Three basic things are needed downtown. First more everyday retail- groceries, pharmacies, book stores, music stores- real places for real people to shop. Uptown thrives because of its shopping. Downtown can too.
The second thing that's needed is access and mobility- local (downtown) shuttles or trolleys, rail lines and buses that run late into the wee hours so folks can come downtown, party and still get home safely after last call. The third thing is parking. I know for a fact there are folks that refuse to come downtown simply because of the crooked/criminal parking lot businesses. If commercial parking lots would just crawl into the 21st century, and provide real secure parking, honest and obvious pricing and signage, with a receipt for payment system, you'd see more people downtown.

Dallas police undercounting assaults according to experts

So, who wants to wake up one day and find out that Dallas is high on the 'dangerous' list like Chicago or New Orleans?
Let's just cover up the problem- it'll go away after a while.

Salvation Army now accepting debit, credit cards for those with a lack of change

Scrooge here! I don't give money to people ringing bells anymore than I'd give money to someone on the street- I see both as part of the same problem. If the Savior's Army collected $2.4 million last year, along with the new Bridge, and the homeless programs in effect, you'd think there be some change taking place. Any and every direction, any part of the population takes, there will always be folks ready to make money off of them. All I'm saying is that whether you're working or out of work, have kids or not, or any of a thousand different life situations you might find yourself in, there's always somebody there to try and rip you off. And if they can pull on your heart-strings with the 'needy', they'll do it. I'm sure these folks do some fine work for the under-privileged, but someone IS making money from those buckets.
How many times have the taxpayers been told the newest tax increase will, among other things, support the effort to help the homeless? Somehow it never seems to get better though does it? I wonder why that is. If donations from your average-broke-citizen would cease, the City might actually have to spend your tax dollars on what they promised they would, instead of useless 'aesthetic' projects that only hide the problems.

Flash mob gathers at Mockingbird Station to call attention to homelessness

Interesting event...but that's about all- interesting! Raising public awareness is a good thing, but it won't really do much. The folks that won't make eye-contact are painfully aware as we all are that there are homeless people. For endless generations we've just accepted the homeless as a fact of life in America.
The homeless problem will not be solved by trying to get reactions from drivers. The drivers are tax-payers who pay a great deal of their wages to have their government 'solve problems'. What else is your average citizen supposed to do? Should they give away their money to all the street people they see? Should they take in as many as they can and feed, clothe, and house them? Nice idea, but they'll go broke themselves- then they'll wind up on the streets. Kinda defeats the purpose doesn't it? There are millions of folks in the streets across America- that won't be solved by the little guy. I doubt anyone will solve it.

Colleen- I'm not a fan of the guy by any means, but what gives you or 'the lgbt folks' the right to tell anyone where they should or should not go to church?
I agree all church-is politics, but does anyone tell you where to go?

Lane closures on Woodall Rodgers Freeway continue for Deck Park construction

DC- the problem with another park is that it will do nothing for retail business in downtown Dallas. You know, that 'revitalizing' thing they like to talk about.
In the long run parks won't do anything for downtown but give the street-folk a nice place to stay.
With a population that is so spread out over many sq miles, parks won't attract people to the area- shopping, clubs, and restaurants will. People don't spend bucks in Uptown because of the parks in the area.
A much better use of the money spent on this park or the one on Main St. might have been tax breaks or other incentives to enable small retail businesses to set up shop downtown.
    But what do I know?
