First-time author features Dallas' best dives, clubs, and restaurants
This is actually the first time I've asked to get a copy of a book to review and it was sent to me electronically within a matter of minutes. Book publishers, take note.

Dallas frozen yogurt meltdown: Braum's
The chocolate-vanilla twist from Braum's reminds me of the fro-yo I used to get in the dining halls in college. And that's not a bad thing; fro-yo was a food group for me.
Good to know there's a place where you can still get the old stuff.

DART plays hard-to-get with open records request
Matt, you bring up an excellent point. I've had this sort of trouble as a journalist and I can only imagine that citizens who have half that much trouble would be dissuaded from trying to seek public information.
In gathering simple stats for a story about how the economy is affecting school districts, 11 of the ISDs I petitioned didn't even respond by the deadline (including Dallas ISD and Fort Worth ISD, two important parts of the piece). The whole experience was illuminating and discouraging. I feel your pain!

I-30 estimated to be reopened at 2 p.m. today after diesel fuel tanker fire
From TxDOT as of 2 p.m.:
Interstate 30 eastbound left and center lanes are now open to traffic after an early morning accident involving a diesel fuel tanker. The Big Town overpass is open to north and southbound traffic.
The eastbound frontage road on Interstate 30 and the right mainlane remain closed until debris from the accident is completely cleared.

Barbecue report: Baker's Ribs off Greenville in Dallas
They have incredible pork tacos at Baker's Ribs on Greenville. They're something like $1.50 and are loaded with pork, pico, and BBQ sauce. Next time I go, I'll skip the meat plate and just get the tacos.

Time to pay up if you're late on toll fees, says TxDOT
Good question, Pavel. The minutiae is confusing. I asked Mark Pettit, the public information officer for TxDOT Dallas, to help.
He says: "You are correct, this is a TxDOT (NOT NTTA) Toll Violation Recovery effort. Unfortunately, there is not a web site for the public to check and see if they owe fees; however, it's my understanding that notices of toll violation were sent to all toll violators, and the sixth paragraph [the one that begins with "toll road users may inquire..."] instructs the public on how they can inquire."
Mark said he attempted to call the 888 number listed, and it only took a few minutes to get the information he needed.
Hope this helps.

Experience the Amazon without those pesky mosquitoes
I've had a few people ask me what Lovell's day job was before she was retired, since it's clear that going to the Amazon nearly 50 times costs a pretty penny. Lovell told me her former profession off-the-record, so I can't divulge that. What I can say is that she saved her money wisely and later got discounts once she arrived to the Amazon.
She said this right after telling me about her former job: "I'm from a humble background; you save your money and go."

UPDATED: Residents of Sycamore Heights in Fort Worth blast city about planned natural gas pipeline
The question has been posed to me about where in the area Chesapeake Energy has laid pipelines similar to the one that is slated to run underneath Carter Avenue. The concern, I believe, is that some homeowners would like proof of location -- beyond just "we've done it before."
(I'm referring to this part in the above story: According to Bond, this location isn't the first pipeline to be routed through a busy neighborhood, nor is it an especially new process... "This is the same kind of pipeline being installed to move gas from wells in many areas.” The pipe is a solid half-inch thick steel pipe 16 inches in diameter.)
Here's what Justin Bond says, public affairs supervisor for Chesapeake: "Pipelines of this type currently exist in residential areas in Haltom City, Richland Hills, Arlington and other cities across Tarrant County. Just like the proposed pipeline on Carter Avenue, the existing pipelines mentioned above are constructed of the same quality required by federal standards. It’s unlikely, however, that these other pipelines are bored 80 to 130 feet deep, as the line at Carter Avenue is proposed. As there are a number of companies installing pipelines around these cities and others, it’s important to note that all easements and operations are not necessarily Chesapeake pipelines."
[For transparency's sake, I was told the pipelines would be bored 70 to 130 feet deep as opposed to the above comment which says it will be 80 to 130 feet deep.]
