Some Dallas City Hall reporters not digging into real issues
Mike D, I'm not sure why some folks throw out claims as fact. There's no doubt there is corruption in government, but you can't saddle the current council with stuff that happend 5-10 years ago, its been too much turnover. A watchful eye is necessary, but we can't make up our own facts.

New player in local news (and nonprofit) space
I hope to provide jobs for out of work journalists and citizen journalists who want to contribute to media. It's been great to have Pegasus as a guide.

Thanks Mike for the post and thanks jtmbls for the kind words. The nonprofit model won't work for everyone, but it does have its place in whatever this thing will look like on the other side. Pegasus and DSN are just two pieces to a huge puzzle. Anyone who claims to have it figured out is lying.

City of Garland cancels Fourth of July celebration
I hate to hear the news. It's amazing that Garland is canceling their 4th, but yet the Rangers shoot off fireworks after every Friday home game.
We'll if you're looking for a fun time, head on out to the Fair Park Fourth. Should be a good time.

Pools and recreation centers are needed in southern Dallas
I'd like to see 24 Hour Fitness move into Southern Dino. There are so many folks that I know who drive to Cedar Hill from Oak Cliff and Southwest Dallas.

Proposition One victory reinforces my decision to move to Dallas
It's been a while since I've stirred it up like this around here. Let me just say that it would be great if all municipalities had to do is just sit back and wait for the dollars to come rolling in. That's not how America works. America gave away land to individuals (did black folks get any of that) via land grant and let people work it. It's been there from the start.
Ft. Worth gave millions of dollars in incentives to Omni for their hotel that they will never get back. That's cool, I think it's great. They're investment will be rewarded in Feb. 06 when the AFC Championship Team walks through the door for the Super Bowl.
To say that because the private sector won't go it alone means it's a bad deal is so short sighted. Has anyone ever used a friends corporate discount and then paid it back? A few things can happen in this scenario:
Friend A buys good for Friend B, gives it to him or her and never gets paid back.
Friend A buys good for Friend B, and Friend B decides they didn't want it. Friend A is stuck.
Friend A buys good for Friend B, gives it to them in exchange for the price that they bought it.
Friend A buys good for Friend B, charges a little above their discount for the trouble and makes a few bucks. Friend A still got it for less than market.
There is risk in every scenario, but you hope for Scenario 3 & 4. It's not for everybody, but the truth is it takes tax dollars to push a city. If municipalities stopped courting businesses and everyone had to pay for their services with property taxes, the moaning and complaining would never end.

Trey Garrison: Why I oppose the people's hotel
We (the people of Dallas, you know, the ones who actually vote and have the most to gain or lose) already own a hotel, The Grand Hyatt at DFW Airport. It is one of the most profitable hotels in the chain.
To assume that the convention center will make more money on conventions if the hotel is not built is to assume we can attract conventions without it. That is a poor, poor assumption.
Dallas (you know they folks who will actually vote on this) has booked more rooms this year -1 million room nights- than we have in recent memory because conventions have pledged to come here on contingent that the hotel is built.
To say that this is a "taxpayer hotel" is political speak. Revenue bonds are not paid from the general fund and not one street or job is lost because of revenue bond money directed to the hotel. The hotel would have to sit empty for three years for this to be even close to a bad deal for the city. Not even the Vote Yes think that will happen.
What about the people's airport? You know, the millions of dollars in revenue bonds directed to improvements at Love Field? Where's the outcry? Where are editorials? Oh yeah, Mr. Crow doesn't own an airport (does he?).
23 of 24 Convention Center Hotels recently have been funded by some sort of public assistance and been successful. The lone exception is St. Louis. Dallas...St. Louis... no comparison. We have 6 million people here in DFW, do they even have 1/10 of that in The Lou?
Houston built a CCH with revenue bonds and sold the hotel and made a little. They have passed us in bookings and the main reason is the attached hotel.
I live in Dallas and this is our city. The burbs will do what they do regardless, we're different. The optimists have moved this city forward and the pessimists let the Cowboys go without a fight. Pessimists opposed the stimulus package but will jog in the park once it's built. Pessimists want us to lose convention business.
And last but not least Trey........ I'll let you know when we can meet up with the fam for dinner. Thanks for the invite.

Tiffini would make and outstanding councilperson. She is already a supreme servant of the people of Dallas. I am excited about her vision for the city.

Dallas County Commissioners make smart decision regarding inland port
Good bull Mike (that means good job in Aggie -as you know-).
I don't like how the county is coming to the game after others have gotten moving on it already. The business folks have done right by Wilmer and Hutchins so far.

It's a myth that the Texas Rangers are a big market team
Even when I lived in G.P. I caught one or two Ft. Worth Cats games a year. It just makes sense $$$ wise. Even when we go to Ranger games we buy the cheapest tickets and run for the picnic tables in the outfield. The prices are just outrageous. Dr. Pepper and La Grave are really where it's at.

Six Flags and H.H. work in Arlington because you only go once or twice a year and it's a planned trip. You should have a spur of the moment option for the game of baseball. The City of Dallas needs to stop tripping and get us some baseball. TODAY!

Man I wish it was the American Association. A downtown ballpark (especially on the South Side :-) would be sweet either way.

Dallas ISD to conduct an independent review of the district's athletic eligibility policies
Dallas gave up the basketball title to make sure there was no (more) negative publicity before their next bond package. Did anyone hear of any "findings" from an "investigation" into the alleged incidents at SOC High School? I haven't.
