University of Texas at Arlington launches LGBT "Safe Zone" initiative
Isn't that just a sad commentary on Texas Christians?
So-called-Christian: "Hello, I'm a Southern Baptist and I'd just like to welcome you and your roomate to the neighborhood and invite you all to go to church with us three times a week so you can hear about how Christ wants us all to love one another and not judge each other and live in peace regardless of the sins we may commit..."
Gay person: "Well, ok, but that's not my roomate, it's my partner. We're Gay."
So-called-Christian: "Oh, well in that case, I hope you burn in the eternal fires of damnation you freakin' abomination of a disgusting human. You and your kind make me sick and I hate your ugly stinking guys. Just know that I will pray for you to die of AIDS because it was created just for sick buttholes like you."

Booker T. Washington High named one of eight most successful magnet schools in U.S.
Ironic that Mr. Washington was an inventor; I would have been nice if this was the "Booker T Washington High School for Science, Math, and I.T. skills". Oh well... Even though other countries will take away great jobs from our children in most industries, at least we still have the entertainment industry cornered for now!!! Yea, U.S.A.! We have our priorities straight!

Merry KKKhristmas
who knows. Could be that good ol fashion "Christian values" that the Bush family likes to promote.
You know, the kind that charges a exorbitant entrance fee at the front door of the mega-church to keep the trash and minorities out. Great Christians.

Principal at Dallas ISD school doesn't evacuate following a bomb threat
It's good to see some common sense being used for once. You know how many prank threats are made every school year? A lot. If schools were forced to evacuate every time, then there would be no classes during any testing days because students would be calling all the time! This is the reason they finally had to let the principals make the call - it isn't because they don't care about the kids. Gimme a break! I find it difficult to believe there is a whole bunch of terrorists around just plotting to randomly blow up schools. The threat is nil. We can start coming down off the fear mongering that G.W. Bush has instilled in everyone now.

Bible study not a big draw at Tarrant County high schools
Trauma is reading another witless blog entry.
Trauma from religion only happens when people constantly shove it in your face.
I would love to walk around downtown without having to be asked by every street nutjob if I've been saved. Why don't they believe me when I say, "Yes, I have - now F*CK off!"?

Red Lobster
yah, seriously. I can't believe this is being rated. This is the McDonalds of seafood. No one can honestly say that they think the best seafood comes from a chain. You'd have better luck just going to Albertson's meat market and cooking your fish / shrimp / lobster yourself. at least you won't get the squirts (hopefully).

Dallas-Fort Worth the place to be for new jobs
yes. it is all liberals fault. Iraq war too! Damn the Clintons for hiding those WMD's. Damn Gore for 9/11.
BTW, the distinction of non-farm jobs is probably that: --The "farm jobs" get taken by hard-working immigrants (yes, usually illegal) --The "non-farm jobs" get taken by lazy-ass Texans (yes, usually conservative) that bitch and moan about the illegals taking their jobs.

Should the U.S. lower the legal drinking age?
I was 11 when I first tasted MD 20/20 (such cool uncles I had), but that doesn't mean I want to lower the age to 10.
I do agree that if you are of age to serve in the military, then you should be allowed to get a head start on alcoholism, but ONLY if you are actually serving on ACTIVE duty! No freebies for the college-bound kiddos. Freshmen need to be reminded that there are other thrills in life besides beer. Like smoking weed.
I bet this coalition of college presidents think they're soooo smart - they're basically tired of being rejected by 21 y/o drunk girls, so they want to see if they can get some naive 18 y/o's!! I'm on to their plot, the filthy bastards.

Rowlett Police warn against brazen daytime break-ins
If we can't rely on the parents, then we basically have to cross our fingers because that kid is facing an uphill battle.
Teachers can only give so much attention to each child they have in class each day and counselors run a very distant second to parents as nurturers. Most kids I've seen in alternative schools have one thing in common: crappy parent(s) that don't pay attention to them.
It's true that we can't always rely on parents, but outside of holding parents responsible for their kid's actions, I don't see how the school can help them. Usually the teachers and principals just rush to get that delinquent child out the door because they can't deal with them anymore. What's the next stop after that? Probably jail.

Dallas ISD teachers dissatisfied with new rules for grading
I came of age in the early 90's - a time when our classrooms were having its typewriters replaced with computers (I literally only got to use the typewriter for two weeks). Now, I'll play devil's advocate here and grant that kids may have to learn more about technology and computers and such than we did, but the main courses that they suck at most in this country are subjects that haven't changed much since 'ol man Yost (sorry, couldn't help it) was in school: Reading, Writing, Basic Math, and Science fundamentals.
But I'll be damned if these kids don't kick ass with things like "Grand Theft Auto", "Guitar Hero", MySpace, over-elaborate Texting/IM acronyms, etc. If the Japanese ever find themselves in need of a large mass of witless & self-absorbed video game testers, then this next generation may actually have hope of finding gainful employment.

Wylie ISD in midst of separation of church and state debate
Over the years, I have developed a profound understanding of my faith in God and I am by no means trying to kick him out of my life, but I do agree with the founding fathers like Jefferson that insisted separation of Church and State be entered into the Constitution - not just to guarantee us the freedom of religion but also to protect our freedom from the Vatican or ANY unaccountable religious leader. Even the local televangelists must be held accountable for their actions when they solicit money and then build mansions and runways for their personal use.
What a terrible place this would be if our government was run by people that could use their interpretation of the bible as rule of law with no accountability - the Taliban of Afghanistan, the Salem witch trials, the Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades - these are a few that immediately come to mind here. There have been too many people killed in the name of God that we NEED the church leaders to be separate from the state leaders.
We wear many hats throughout our lives - father, brother, husband, etc and it is often difficult when you have to reconcile your duty to your religion and your duty as a citizen to defend the right of other religions in this country to exist. These are the times we need understanding and the acceptance to do unto others as we would have done to us instead of plotting ways to bomb them into oblivion and shut them up.
Sorry for the rant, but I’m sick of people using religion as a shield for their own bigotry and ideas like pushing scripture into textbooks. If you want your kid to understand theories based on the scientific method, send them to science class. If you want your kid to understand faith based on the bible, send them to Sunday school and church. Just quit trying to mix the two, because it just doesn’t work.

Carter's most outspoken pipeline opponent runs out of time
People "don't see the big deal" until something like this happens to them and then realize how helpless the common citizen is against companies - ESPECIALLY energy and insurance companies. You are pretty much screwed. It doesn't help when you have CNN giving a somewhat lop-sided view of this issue by believing every word Chesapeake tells them:

Most towns in Texas are faith-based communities. Uh... as long as your faith is not Jewish. Um, or Islamic...
Or Hindu.
Or Mormon, Catholic, Jehovah's Witness, Buddhist, gay-sympathetic-Protestant -- okay, so basically anything that doesn't celebrate Christmas in a gun-toting, God-fearing, anti-immigration, anti-secular, anti-welfare, anti-equal rights, pro-military-spending fashion.
