Sorta. Any new "sparkling wine" in the US after 2006 cannot legally be called champagne.

jtmbls - there are legal workarounds in the US to still call it champagne - but if you want the real thing, it comes from France.

Yes, David. Technically speaking for something to be called champagne it must be from the Champagne region France. However, there are legal workarounds in the US - which is what initially prompted my question.
Much like true 100% agave tequila must be bottled in Mexico.

If it was a .02 (and actually enforced) in Dallas you'd basically shut down most bars in the city. One drink and you'd be over and it's hard to walk or ride mass transit in this city.
